IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given diagram illustrate the process, how geothermal energy is consumed to generate electricity.

In the process of generating electricity through geothermal energy.First of all,the cold water is pumped down into the soil in the depth of four and half kilometre.Under the earth is an injection well which transfer the water towards Geothermal zone, there is hot rocks in this zone.As a result the water become hot. There is also an injection well on the other side of this zone which pumps the hot up the soil towards condenser.Condenser converts this hot water into steam. This steam is then used to run the turbine. As the turbine runs,it also runs the generator.this is a high powered generator which is used to prode electricity. It is powered by turbine,as turbine move by steam it also makes movement in generator which results in the production of electricity. This electricity is then supplied to lines which is used by local peolple.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You describe the main sequence from pumping cold water underground to using steam to drive a turbine and generator, and you include the depth of 4.5 km. However, the account is only partially complete and contains a significant factual error: the well bringing heated water to the surface is the production well, not “another injection well.” The overview is also missing; a brief opening summary could identify the process as a cycle in which underground heat converts water to steam to generate electricity. The final claim that electricity is supplied to “local people” is not shown in the diagram, which depicts transmission lines and a pylon. Focus on accurately naming the two wells and reporting only features visible in the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The stages are presented in a generally understandable order, and sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “As a result,” and “This steam is then” help the reader follow the process. However, the response is one continuous paragraph, so the opening and process description are not clearly separated. Some connections are repetitive or awkward: the turbine and generator relationship is explained several times, while the transition from underground heating to the production well is less clear. The phrase “In the process of generating electricity through geothermal energy.First of all” also runs two ideas together. Use a concise introduction, then a logically ordered process paragraph, with linking expressions used selectively.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “Geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “steam,” and “turbine,” which makes the subject clear. However, the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or unnatural. “Geothermal energy is consumed” does not express the intended meaning as well as “used,” and “pumps the hot up the soil” is unclear. There are also spelling errors such as “prode” and “peolple,” alongside imprecise phrases such as “high powered generator.” Aim for precise process verbs and standard technical collocations, and check spelling carefully. This would make the description more fluent and reduce moments when the reader has to infer your meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts some longer sentences and uses sequencing clauses, for example, “As the turbine runs, it also runs the generator.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the description awkward. Examples include “The given diagram illustrate,” “the water become hot,” and “which transfer the water,” where subject–verb agreement is incorrect. The opening also has faulty punctuation and sentence boundaries: “energy.First of all, the…” Several sentences join independent ideas with commas or run on, particularly the explanation of the turbine and generator. Practise accurate agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, and use a mix of shorter sentences and controlled subordinate clauses.
