IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diaram illustrates the how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity. The diagram shows the all steps, they have taken before the geothermal power plant.

Overall, the diaram shows some steps, they have before the thgeothermal energy produced. They are in five steps first step are cold water and last step are turbine the electricity.

First of all, the cold water has required, the cold water are pumped 4.5 km down. The second step are injection well through the geothermalzone known as hot rocks. the third step has taken after injection well, the production well, the hot water pump up. After thehot water pump up ,Condenser are used, like smoke are generated it's mean cloud shape has generated., after passes through the the stream turbine plus generate the electricity , after these all stepselectricity areproduced and sent through the wires.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the process as geothermal electricity production and include several relevant stages, including water being pumped down, heated by hot rocks, and returned through the production well. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: you say the final step is “turbine,” whereas the turbine is driven by steam and the generator produces electricity. The sequence after the water returns to the surface is also not reported precisely; the condenser produces steam, which powers the turbine, and the generator then produces electricity. The response is below the required 150 words, which limits the detail you can provide. To improve, give a clear overview of the underground heating and surface electricity-generation stages, then describe each stage accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is an attempt to organise the response with an introduction, an overview, and a sequence beginning “First of all,” followed by “the second step” and “the third step.” This gives the reader some sense of order. However, the overview repeats the introduction rather than summarising the process, and the stages are not consistently separated or clearly linked. The long final sentence joins several events with repeated “after,” making it difficult to follow how steam, the turbine, and generator relate. Paragraphing is limited, and references such as “these all steps” are vague. Use one paragraph for a concise overview and another for the ordered stages, with clear links such as “Next,” “Once heated,” and “Finally.”

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “hot rocks,” “condenser,” and “turbine.” This shows an attempt to describe the diagram rather than relying only on general language. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the meaning unclear, such as “the cold water has required,” “like smoke are generated,” and “the stream turbine.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “diaram,” “thgeothermal,” and “electricity areproduced.” These reduce precision in a task where accurate labels matter. Learn and use the diagram’s exact terms, and choose verbs that describe each action clearly, such as “is pumped,” “is heated,” “is converted into steam,” and “drives.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt to describe a sequence using simple clauses and some longer sentences, but the range of structures is limited and errors are frequent. For example, “The second step are injection well” has problems with the verb and sentence construction, while “the hot water pump up” does not form a complete passive clause. Agreement and articles are also inconsistent in “Condenser are used” and “the cold water are pumped.” The final sentence contains several clauses joined without clear punctuation, so the relationships between events are difficult to understand. Practise accurate passive forms for processes—“cold water is pumped down” and “hot water is pumped up”—and build shorter, complete sentences before combining stages with conjunctions.
