IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the procees of generation of electricity by utilising the geothermal energy as the primary source.

Overall, the process contains 5 steps. The main source the hot rocks are present under the eath's surface, water is used to access its energy and wells are established to trasmit the enrgy to generator.

The initial setup odf the entire process is a cold water tank whose base is directly in contact with the ground, a 4.5 km hollow space is dig that pumps down the stored water. The injection well helps in reaching the cold water to geothermal zone. From this zone of hot rocks the hot water travels upward in the hollow space with the help of the production well. This hot water is then condensed in a rectangular shaped setup.

The condensed water is converted into steam from a small space this team is connected to a camber. This camber contains a turbine that works on steam and spins the it. After this process the turbine passes this to a generator, that is powered by the turbine. This generator produces energy and it is directly connected to the electric tower, supplying energy to it directly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main sequence from pumping cold water underground to generating electricity, and include the key depth of 4.5 km. The overview identifies the hot rocks and the role of the wells, while the body describes the injection well, production well, steam, turbine and generator. This gives the reader a generally accurate account of the process. Some details, however, are unclear or misrepresented: the water is said to be “condensed” and then converted into steam, whereas the diagram shows the condenser releasing steam from the hot water. The turbine also does not pass anything to the generator; it drives it. The overview could more clearly summarise the transformation from cold water to steam and then electricity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a sensible sequence, with an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs following the process from underground to the generator. Sequencing phrases such as “The initial setup,” “From this zone,” and “After this process” help guide the reader. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear, particularly “The injection well helps in reaching the cold water to geothermal zone” and “the turbine passes this to a generator.” The final paragraph also combines several stages in long sentences, making the relationships between the condenser, steam, turbine and generator harder to follow. Use clearer stage-by-stage links and ensure pronouns such as “this” refer unambiguously to a component or action.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “injection well,” “production well,” “turbine” and “generator,” which helps convey the subject. There is also some attempt at more specific description, such as “4.5 km” and “hollow space.” However, noticeable spelling errors (“procees,” “eath's,” “trasmit,” “enrgy”) and inaccurate or awkward word choices reduce precision. “Condensed” does not accurately describe the diagram’s stage, and “electric tower” is less suitable than “transmission pylon.” Some phrases, including “small space” and “rectangular shaped setup,” are vague. Aim for accurate technical terms and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “a cold water tank whose base is directly in contact with the ground” and a sequence of clauses describing the wells. The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors make relationships unclear. For example, “a 4.5 km hollow space is dig” has an incorrect verb form, and “the turbine passes this to a generator, that is powered by the turbine” has faulty clause construction and punctuation. In “spins the it,” the object structure is also incorrect. Work on accurate passive forms, articles and sentence boundaries, and simplify sentences when several stages are being explained at once.
