IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram below illustrates how geothermal energy is used to produce electrical energy.
To summarise, the process of electricity generation through geothermal engery contains five steps. from water pump to steaming to production.
Firstly, cold water is pumped into the ground for 4.5 km.The cold water runs through pipes recahing an underground geothermal zone consisting of naturally heated rocks . Cold water gets heated through those rocks and slowly reaches the production well.
The heated liquid is then pumped upwards by the help of pipes to reach the condenser .The liquid is then converted into hot steam which is connected to a turbine ,which spins rapidly because of the fast flowing steam. The turbine is attached to a generator which is hooked up to the power grid. When the turbine spins it produces electricity offing it to the generator which sends it off to the power line for distribution.
Overall, the entire process of electricity production involves water, steam and spinning of turbines.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main sequence accurately: cold water is sent 4.5 km underground, heated by the hot rocks, brought up through the production well, and used to create steam that powers a turbine and generator. This addresses the process and includes relevant details. However, the overview is unclear: “five steps” is not explained, and “from water pump to steaming to production” does not capture the full transformation from water to electricity. The final overview, “water, steam and spinning of turbines,” is also too general. Some details are less fully developed, particularly the condenser’s role and the generator’s production of electricity. State the overall transformation clearly, then describe each stage precisely without adding unsupported details such as the turbine spinning “rapidly.”
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a generally logical order, moving from water injection to heating, upward movement, steam, and electricity generation. Paragraphing also separates the introduction, process description, and concluding overview. Linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “then,” and “Overall” help guide the reader, so the organisation is coherent. To show more flexible control, make the overview a clear summary of the process rather than an unclear fragment, and avoid repeating the same information: the turbine’s role and electricity transfer are described several times in the final sentences. Some connections are also imprecise, particularly “which is connected to a turbine,” where the reference is not fully clear. Use concise stage-to-stage links and ensure each sentence advances the description.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “production well,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which allows the reader to follow the main stages. There is also some useful variation in describing movement, such as “pumped upwards” and “reaches.” However, several choices are inaccurate or awkward for a formal process description: “steaming” is not a suitable label for a stage, “hooked up to the power grid” is informal, and “offing it to the generator” is unclear. Spelling errors such as “engery” and “recahing” also reduce precision. Aim for standard technical collocations and check spelling carefully; this will make the description more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including the relative clause in “rocks consisting of naturally heated rocks” and the sequence describing how the turbine drives the generator. Most of the process remains understandable, but some sentence structures and punctuation are not controlled consistently. For example, “To summarise, the process … contains five steps. from water pump to steaming to production” has a sentence fragment and an incorrectly capitalised continuation. In “The turbine is attached to a generator which is hooked up…,” punctuation around the relative clause would improve clarity, while the long final sentence joins several actions without clear grammatical boundaries. Use complete sentences, check sentence openings and punctuation, and vary complex structures while keeping each stage easy to follow.
