IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided flowchart illustrates the process of geothermal energy consumption in order to generate electricity.

Overall, the process contain several phases. To commence from pumping down the cold water in earth and cumulating at transforming generated electricity to electric pole. It is linear, man made series of steps.

To begin with, the cold water pumped down the earth at almost 4.5km depth known as the injection well, where hot rocks are present and it is called geothermal zone. These rocks are high in temperature that shifts the water temperature from low to high. Subsequently, the hot water pumped up with specific machines.

Furthermore, a condenser receives this hot water from the earth and produce steam. The steam is utilized to run turbine in clockwise rotation. Moreover, a generator is attached to the turbine to convert this energy into electricity. Eventually, this electricity is transformed to electrical pole through electrical wires.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main stages and give an overall description of a linear process, from pumping cold water underground to generating electricity. The 4.5 km depth, geothermal zone, upward movement of heated water, condenser, steam, turbine and generator are all relevant details. This provides a sound account of the diagram, though some stages are less fully or precisely explained: for example, the water passes through the hot rocks before rising in the production well, and the generator’s electricity is transmitted by power lines. The phrase “cumulating at transforming generated electricity” makes the overview difficult to understand, and “specific machines” adds an unsupported detail. To strengthen the response, state the sequence clearly and describe only what the diagram shows.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction and overview are followed by stages in sequence, with paragraphing that separates the initial underground process from electricity generation. Connectors such as “To begin with,” “Subsequently,” and “Eventually” help guide the reader. However, some linking is mechanical or does not express the relationship accurately. “Furthermore” and “Moreover” add little, while “To commence from pumping down…” is an incomplete and confusing transition from the overview. The reference in “These rocks” is understandable, but the sequence between heating, pumping the water up, and receiving it in the condenser could be made more explicit. Use fewer, more precise transitions and ensure each sentence connects clearly to the preceding stage.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which helps identify the diagram’s components. There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “utilized” and “transformed.” However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this process: “energy consumption” suggests energy being used rather than produced, “cumulating” does not fit the intended meaning, and “electrical pole” is not the usual term for the transmission structure. “Specific machines” is vague, and “clockwise rotation” is not supported by the diagram. Aim for precise process collocations such as “water is pumped,” “steam drives the turbine,” and “electricity is transmitted through power lines.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the injection well, where hot rocks are present” and a sequence of linked process statements. The main stages remain understandable, but some grammatical errors reduce clarity. In “the process contain several phases,” the singular subject requires “contains.” Several process descriptions omit the passive auxiliary, as in “the cold water pumped down” and “the hot water pumped up”; use “is pumped.” The overview fragment beginning “To commence from…” is not a complete sentence, and “a condenser … produce steam” has a subject–verb agreement error. Work on complete sentence construction, passive forms, and agreement while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
