IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

in this diagrm we see that geothermal energy is used to produce electricity by used of cold water to through a process to produce electricity.

it illustrate how energy is used to make electricity in from which process it have been to make electricity through cold water down to pump where it become hot than production up the water make stram to turbine and generator to produce energy.

in here we see that firstly cold water which go down 4.5km by pump in the injection well where it have been proces of hot rocks zone water brcome hot than there is production well where it go up trough pump and come to the condenser after it the steam of water go to the turbine where it pwered by steam of hot water than there generator which poered by turbine to produces electricity in the last generator give energy to the main line.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main stages of the process: cold water is pumped down the injection well, heated by hot rocks, brought up through the production well, and used to generate electricity. The 4.5 km depth is also reported accurately. However, the response only partially fulfils the task because it gives little clear overview of how the stages connect and does not explain the condenser’s role precisely; “the steam of water go to the turbine” skips the conversion of hot water into steam at the condenser. The opening repeats the purpose rather than summarising the process as a whole. To strengthen the report, provide a concise overview and describe each stage in a clear, accurate sequence, including the turbine driving the generator.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response follows the general order of the process, moving from cold water to the wells and then to the turbine and generator. This gives the reader a basic sense of progression. However, the ideas are not clearly divided or linked: the first two paragraphs repeat the purpose, while the final paragraph contains nearly all the process details in one long sequence. Connectors such as “firstly,” “than,” and “after it” are repetitive or unclear, and references such as “there” do not always make the location or component clear. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and stages, and link each step with precise transitions such as “next,” “once heated,” and “finally.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which helps identify the equipment. However, the range is limited and several word choices or spellings make the description difficult to follow, including “diagrm,” “stram,” “pwered,” and “main line.” Phrases such as “by used of cold water” and “production up the water” are not natural ways to describe the process. Aim for accurate collocations and consistent technical terms—for example, say that water is “pumped down,” “heated by hot rocks,” and “converted into steam.” Proofreading spelling would also make your meaning clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt to describe a sequence using clauses joined by words such as “where,” “than,” and “after,” but these longer constructions are often faulty, and sentence boundaries are unclear. For example, “it have been proces of hot rocks zone water brcome hot” does not form a clear grammatical relationship between the water and the geothermal zone. There are also recurring problems with verb forms and agreement, as in “it illustrate,” “water go up,” and “generator give.” Most sentences therefore require the reader to infer the intended meaning. Build accuracy with short, complete sentences first, then add a few controlled clauses: “Cold water is pumped down the injection well. It is heated by the hot rocks and pumped back to the surface.”
