IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrate various process of generation of electricity in a geothermal plant through geothermal energy .It includes six different steps .

Initially , 1st step begins with cold water from the surface injected in a well whose length is roughly 4 km . As the water reaches to the bottom of the well its temperature raises with the surge in the depth of the well . When the water flows in a geothermal zone (hot rocks) their temperature observe a surge due to the external atmostphere and hot water reaches to the production well. Further a pump is install in the well whose main function is to tranfer the hot water in the condenser where steam is generated by the water . Later steam is transported in the generator where a coil is rotated by the steam as a result turbine produce the required electicity .Ultimately it is added to the grid station for further process .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main subject and describe a broadly sequential process, including cold water entering underground, heating in the geothermal zone, and steam being used to generate electricity. However, the account only partially reports the diagram’s key features and contains important inaccuracies: the well is labelled 4.5 km, not roughly 4 km; no pump is shown in the production well; and steam powers the turbine, which drives the generator, rather than entering the generator directly. The overview is also missing: state clearly that water is circulated through hot rocks and converted to steam to produce electricity. Include the two wells and their distinct functions, and avoid adding unsupported details such as a coil or a “grid station.”

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The stages are presented in a generally understandable order, and sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “Further,” “Later,” and “Ultimately” help guide the reader. This gives the response a coherent overall arrangement. However, the account is written as one continuous paragraph, and the transitions sometimes make the process harder to follow—for example, “Later steam is transported in the generator” skips the turbine stage and confuses the sequence. Some links are also mechanical rather than showing the precise relationship between stages. Organise the response into an introduction and overview followed by a clearly ordered process description, and use explicit links such as “the heated water then rises” and “the steam subsequently drives the turbine.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “production well,” “condenser,” and “steam,” which helps communicate the topic. There is also an attempt to use more formal wording, such as “generation” and “Ultimately.” However, inaccurate word choice and spelling noticeably weaken precision: “external atmosphere” does not describe the heat source shown, “grid station” is not supported by the diagram, and “electicity,” “atmostphere,” and “tranfer” are misspelled. Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “temperature observe a surge.” Aim for accurate, conventional process language and check spelling; precise terms are more effective than elaborate but unsuitable expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts both simple and longer sentences, including a time clause in “As the water reaches to the bottom of the well” and a result clause beginning “as a result.” This shows some range, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to make parts difficult to read. For example, “The diagram illustrate” needs subject–verb agreement, “various process” needs a plural form, and “a pump is install” requires a past participle. The long sentence beginning “Later steam…” also joins several stages without clear punctuation. Practise accurate basic clauses first, then build complex sentences with controlled punctuation and consistent present-tense verbs.
