IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates how geothermal energy is used for producing electricity.

Overall, the process consist of five different phases, starting with pumping down cold water and ending with manufacturing energy in generator and turbine.

In the initial stage, cold water pumped down around 4.5 km deep into the injection well, in between the production well and injection well, cold water turned into hot water through geothermal zone (hot rocks). Next, those hot water pumped up inside the codenser for further process.

Inside the condenser the pumped hot water turned into steam, and those generated steam pushed into generator which powered the turbine to rotate and gererate source of power. In the final part, electricity is produced by the rotative force of turbine. All of these produced electricity then supplied by the electrical pole for the consumers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main stages, from pumping cold water underground to producing electricity, and include the important 4.5 km depth and the geothermal zone. The overview also gives the process a clear beginning and end. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the hot water is pumped up through the production well to the condenser, not “inside” it, and steam powers the turbine, which in turn drives the generator. Your account reverses this relationship by saying steam is pushed into the generator and the turbine generates power. The final reference to electricity being supplied to consumers by a pole is not shown; the diagram shows a transmission pylon. The response is also 14 words below the required minimum, limiting the detail provided.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall sequence and is divided into an introduction, an overview and two stages of detail. Sequencing phrases such as “In the initial stage,” “Next,” and “In the final part” help the reader follow the process. This coherent arrangement is a strength. To make the progression more precise, keep each stage’s components and actions together: the production well carries hot water to the condenser, while steam then travels to the turbine and the turbine drives the generator. The phrase “in between the production well and injection well” interrupts the sequence and makes the water’s route harder to follow. Some references, including “those hot water” and “those generated steam,” are also unclear; use “the hot water” and “the steam” to maintain clear links.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser” and “turbine,” which makes the topic recognisable. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “pumped down” and “turned into steam.” However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “manufacturing energy” is not a natural description of electricity generation, and “rotative force” is not the appropriate term for the turbine’s action. “Electrical pole” also misidentifies the transmission pylon. Spelling errors such as “codenser” and “gererate” reduce accuracy. Aim for standard technical collocations and check spelling, while retaining the useful process vocabulary already present.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the longer description of water passing through the geothermal zone. The sequence remains understandable despite some grammatical errors. However, errors in verb forms and agreement occur in key sentences: “the process consist” should be “the process consists,” and “cold water pumped down” needs a passive verb form, such as “is pumped down.” Similarly, “those hot water pumped up” needs both correct agreement and a passive construction. The sentence beginning “In the initial stage” also joins separate ideas with a comma, creating a run-on structure. Use complete passive clauses consistently to describe the process, and divide long sentences where necessary.
