IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The provided diagram illustrates how greothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
In overall, we can see water is the main main source of electricity of electricity and the process starts from injection wall and it ens with the generator.
To begin with , the first and the foremost step is to collect the cold water and passed through the underwater pump , then the water is heated wiyth the help of hot rocks and pumped up in the condenser from the production well where the water gets converted into steam
Furthermore , this steam is transferred into turbine so that it can rotate although generator is connected to turbinne so when it rotate power is produced and this electricity is then transferred to transmission power house for commercial use .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the process as electricity production and mention several central stages: cold water is sent underground, heated by hot rocks, brought up through the production well, and converted to steam that drives a turbine and generator. However, the overview is unclear and inaccurate: “water is the main source of electricity” overlooks geothermal heat as the energy source, and the process does not start at the injection well but with cold water being pumped down it. Some details are also misreported, including the “underwater pump” and electricity being sent to a “transmission power house”; the diagram shows a transmission pylon. The response is also 19 words below the required minimum, limiting the detail provided. Add a clear overview and accurately describe the wells and equipment.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic sequence, moving from water collection to heating, steam, the turbine and generator. Paragraphing also separates the introduction and overview from the process description. However, progression is weakened by the unclear overview and by linking several stages in long sentences with “then,” “where,” and “so that.” The opening of the final paragraph, “Furthermore,” does not clearly signal a new stage, and the phrase “although generator is connected to turbinne” creates a confusing relationship between the components. Use one paragraph for the overview and organise the remaining stages in order, with clear links such as “Next” and “Finally.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “production well,” “condenser,” “steam,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which helps communicate the main stages. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “underwater pump” does not describe the injection well, “transmission power house” misnames the pylon, and “water is the main source of electricity” is imprecise. Spelling errors such as “greothermal,” “wiyth,” and “turbinne” are noticeable, while repetition in “main main” and “electricity of electricity” reduces clarity. Learn the diagram’s exact labels and use precise process verbs such as “pump,” “heat,” “convert,” and “drive.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and longer sentences, and the sequence can generally be followed. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors in verb forms, articles, agreement and punctuation occur frequently enough to make some relationships unclear. For example, “the first and the foremost step is to collect the cold water and passed” shifts from “is” to an incorrect verb form; “In overall” is not a correct introductory phrase; and “although generator is connected to turbinne so when it rotate” combines clauses without a clear grammatical structure. There are also missing articles in “although generator” and “connected to turbine.” Practise writing shorter, complete sentences first, then combine stages using accurate clauses and consistent verb forms.
