IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The below diagram illustarates that how geothermal energy is used to make the electicity.
Overall. the process is consist of 5 satges, where it starts from cold water and ends on genrator beside with turbines and followed by transmission lines.
The first step is pupmed the cold water to down with depth to 4.5km, The pushed water than pass through the injection well and there is Geothermal zone are present between the injection and production well called geothermal zone. The production well is responsible for the pumped up the hot water to upper side that received from the previous stages in the form of hot rocks.
At the 4th step condenser with high pressure makes the hot water into steam which is accounted for the producing the energy in the form of electricity.
The respective steam goes into the 5th stage where generator and turbine are present. The steam with high pressure and energy move the trubine and it move the high velocity that cause to produce the electricity than goes to the genrator along with power lines

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main sequence from cold water being sent underground to electricity generation, and you include the important 4.5 km depth. The overview also recognises that the process begins with cold water and ends with electricity production. However, some stages are unclear or inaccurately described: the water passes through the injection well before reaching the hot-rock zone, rather than the zone being “between” wells as a separate stage, and the condenser converts the heated water into steam—not by “high pressure” as stated. The final account also confuses the turbine and generator: steam drives the turbine, which in turn drives the generator. To make the report more complete and precise, explain these relationships clearly and avoid adding unsupported details such as high pressure and high velocity.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall progression, with an opening, an overview and descriptions of the underground and surface stages. Sequencing expressions such as “The first step” and “At the 4th step” help the reader follow the process. However, the paragraphing is limited, and some links between stages are difficult to follow. For example, “The production well is responsible for the pumped up the hot water to upper side” does not clearly connect the water’s heating in the geothermal zone to its return to the surface. The final sentence also muddles the sequence between turbine, generator and power lines. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and process details, and connect each stage with clear references such as “after heating” and “the turbine then drives the generator.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “condenser,” “steam” and “transmission lines,” which helps convey the subject. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning harder to understand. Examples include “pupmed,” “illustarates,” “genrator” and “trubine,” as well as the awkward phrase “makes the hot water into steam.” “The pushed water” and “move the high velocity” are also imprecise expressions. Aim for accurate technical terms and natural process language, such as “is pumped down,” “is heated,” “is converted into steam” and “the steam turns the turbine.” Proofreading spelling would also improve clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which is accounted for the producing the energy.” However, grammatical control is weak in several places, and errors sometimes obscure the relationships between stages. For instance, “the process is consist of 5 satges” has an incorrect verb construction, while “The production well is responsible for the pumped up” uses an incomplete passive pattern. There are also problems with sentence boundaries and punctuation, such as the comma splice after “4.5km,” and the final sentence joins several clauses without clear structure. Practise accurate passive forms (“water is pumped down”) and simple present descriptions, then use shorter, clearly punctuated sentences to explain each stage.
