IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The illustration gives information about the process involve in the production of energy by Geothermal power plant. Overall, this process complete in five steps, by changing cold water into hot water and produce steam though this and this gives to turbine which which supply power to generator and energy is produced.

It is quite evident from the given diagram that the production of energy takes five steps. First of all, cold water pumped down with the length of 4.5 km through vessels. After that injection well start and they pass through the geothermal zone which is hot and change cold water into hot water and thus at the end of the there are several production well whcih help in pumping water upward.

Furthermore, the condensor is attached at the end of this in which hot produce steam and it also conected with the turbine. Steam powered the turbine, it start to move around and then it supply power to generator, thus also it produce electricity. At the end electricity tower is attached which help in translocation of energy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages and give an overall summary that cold water is heated underground before steam drives machinery to generate electricity. The 4.5 km depth and the roles of the turbine and generator are also included, so the account is relevant and broadly accurate. However, some stages are not fully or clearly explained: for example, the water passes through one injection well and one production well, rather than “several production well[s],” and the condenser’s role in producing steam is described unclearly as “hot produce steam.” The overview also says there are five steps without clearly distinguishing the numbered stages from the later conversion of steam into electricity. More precise reporting of the sequence and components would make the key features clearer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by two paragraphs describing the process in sequence. Connectors such as “First of all,” “After that,” and “Furthermore” help guide the reader through the stages. However, some links are mechanical or unclear, and references such as “this” and “it” do not always identify the component being discussed. The opening overview repeats the idea that energy is produced, while the final paragraph combines the condenser, turbine, generator, and transmission tower in a way that makes their relationships harder to follow. Use clearer references and give each stage a direct link to the next; this would improve progression while retaining the useful paragraph structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “injection well,” “production well,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “translocation of energy.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “vessels” for the wells, “hot produce steam,” and “electricity tower.” Spelling errors such as “condensor,” “conected,” and “whcih” also reduce precision. Aim for standard process descriptions and check spelling carefully. For example, describe water as being pumped through wells, steam as driving the turbine, and electricity as being transmitted through power lines.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the sequence is generally understandable. However, some sentence structures are faulty, particularly where several actions are joined together: “Steam powered the turbine, it start to move around and then it supply power to generator” contains a comma splice and errors in verb forms and articles. Other examples include “the process involve” and “this process complete,” where subject–verb agreement and auxiliary verbs are missing. The opening sentence also has an unclear construction around “which which supply power.” These errors sometimes make relationships between actions difficult to follow. Practise forming complete clauses, maintaining consistent present-tense verbs, and checking agreement and articles, while keeping the useful range of sentence lengths.
