IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrates the process of generating electricity with the use of geothermal energy.
Overall, the process begins with first step in which cold water pumped down throughout the geothermal zone and ends with the production of electricity which is powered by turbine or steam.
In details, the process starts with the surface's cold water which pumped down to the injection well, the depth between the surface water and injection well is almost 4.5 km. In the following step the water dire3cted to the production well through the geothermal zone or hot rocks which converts the cold water in hot water.
Conversely, the hot water from the production well pumped up to the condenser. After that, the hot water converts into steam, and these steams then directed to the turbine which is powered by the steam. Following this, which the help of generator which is powered with the help of turbine, converts the steam into the electricity and then supplied to homes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main stages in the correct general order: water is pumped down the injection well, heated by the hot rocks, brought up through the production well, and used to generate electricity. The overview also identifies the process’s beginning and end. The depth of 4.5 km is accurately included. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the overview says electricity is powered by “turbine or steam,” whereas steam drives the turbine and the turbine drives the generator. The final claim that electricity is “supplied to homes” is not shown; the diagram indicates transmission by power lines. To strengthen the response, describe the distinct roles of the condenser, turbine and generator more precisely and avoid adding outcomes not depicted.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and a chronological account of the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “In the following step,” “After that” and “Following this” help the reader follow the process. This gives the description a coherent overall progression. However, some links are mechanical or unclear: “Conversely” does not express a contrast between the hot-water stage and the preceding stage, and “Following this, which the help of generator” disrupts the connection between ideas. The overview and body also repeat the start and end of the process without adding much detail. Use simpler, more accurate transitions and make each paragraph’s purpose clearer to improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser” and “turbine,” which makes the stages identifiable. Phrases such as “pumped down” and “pumped up” are also appropriate for describing movement. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive: “with the use of geothermal energy” is less direct than “using geothermal energy,” and “these steams” is not the natural term for the material produced. “Converts the cold water in hot water” also uses an unsuitable verb pattern. There is a spelling slip in “dire3cted.” Aim for more precise process verbs and natural collocations while retaining the useful technical vocabulary you already use.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which converts the cold water in hot water” and sequencing clauses that describe successive stages. However, control is inconsistent, and several errors affect sentence accuracy. For example, “cold water pumped down” and “the hot water … pumped up” need an auxiliary verb (“is pumped”); “the process begins with first step” needs an article and a more natural construction; and “Following this, which the help of generator” is structurally incomplete. There are also problems with agreement and number in “these steams then directed.” Practise forming complete passive clauses and checking articles, auxiliaries and sentence boundaries; these changes would make your process description much clearer.
