IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrate the electricity production through the geothermal energy, commencing from cold water storage to ending in electricity distribution.

Looking at the details, beginning from the cold water, the cold water pumped down almost 4.5 km into the inject well. After that the water flows through the geothermal zone where the hot rocks raise the temperature of water. subsequently, hot water move toward the production well where the hot water pumped up into condenser section. The condenser converts the hot water into the steam. The turbine which is powered by steam, the turbine blades rotate at high speed. Meanwhile, the generator powered by turbine. Generator runs by mechanical energy and it produce electricity. Thereafter the electricity distributed for usage through electric poles.

Overall, the whole process consist of 5 essential steps. The significant step is geothermal zone where cold water turn into hot water. Furthermore, the turbine and generator are the key steps of whole process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main sequence from cold-water pumping through underground heating to electricity generation, and you identify the geothermal zone as the point where the water is heated. The stated depth of about 4.5 km is also accurate. Your overview recognises the key role of the geothermal zone and the turbine-generator stages. However, some details are incomplete or imprecise: the water is heated as it passes through the hot rocks, and the condenser produces steam; it does not simply convert hot water without explaining this change. The final reference to electricity being distributed through “electric poles” is not quite faithful to the diagram, which shows transmission lines and a pylon. More precise coverage of each stage would make the account more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a description of the process in sequence, and a concluding overview. Connectors such as “After that,” “subsequently,” and “Thereafter” help the reader follow the stages, and the progression from underground activity to surface machinery is generally logical. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, with several transitions simply marking the next event rather than showing the relationship between stages. The sentence beginning “The turbine which is powered by steam” is also incomplete, interrupting the flow between the condenser and generator. The overview repeats points already mentioned rather than synthesising the process. Linking related actions in complete sentences and using clearer references to the equipment would strengthen progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “production well,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “mechanical energy.” These terms make the subject clear, and “commencing” and “thereafter” show an attempt to vary your language. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “inject well” is not the standard label, “electric poles” does not accurately describe the diagram’s transmission pylon and lines, and “the key steps” is less precise than describing the turbine and generator as components. Repetition of “cold water,” “hot water,” and “powered” also limits flexibility. Aim for accurate process verbs and natural technical collocations while retaining the useful subject-specific vocabulary you already use.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including a relative clause in “The turbine which is powered by steam” and a sequence of clauses describing the water’s movement. However, errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction are noticeable and sometimes make relationships unclear. For example, “The diagram illustrate” needs subject–verb agreement, while “hot water move” and “it produce electricity” also require matching verb forms. “The turbine which is powered by steam, the turbine blades rotate” is not a complete, well-formed sentence, and “the cold water pumped down” is missing an auxiliary verb. Practise forming complete passive sentences for process descriptions and checking agreement and articles. More accurate control of these patterns would make your range easier to follow.
