IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The picture below illustrates that how to produce electricity with the help of geothermal energy .
it is a crystal clear that , cold water is the main part of production of electricity into geothermal plant . firstly cold water collected and pumped it down through the injection well after the injection well there is a geothermal zone that is hot rocks that helps cold warer to get hot . The diagram shows on the right of the there is the main part of the production that is production well . The hot passing through the production well and then hot goes up with the help of pump .
Moreover, after finished the down process lets start with upper layer process that shows condenser allows hot water steams to passing through it and goes to next part of production where generator turbine generates and hot steams converted into electricity and its ready to go to thermal plant for use.
To conclude , whole process showes to different kind of parts helps a normal water to produce electricity .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main stages: cold water is sent down the injection well, heated by the hot rocks, and brought back up through the production well before steam drives equipment that generates electricity. However, the account only partially covers the process and some details are unclear or inaccurate. For example, the diagram shows water becoming steam in the condenser, but your description says the condenser allows hot water and steam to pass through it. You also suggest that the turbine and generator together convert steam into electricity, rather than explaining that steam powers the turbine and the turbine drives the generator. Include a concise overview and describe the full sequence more precisely, including the 4.5 km depth and the electricity output.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable sequence, moving from the water’s descent to its return to the surface and then to electricity generation. Paragraphing and markers such as “Firstly,” “Moreover,” and “To conclude” help the reader follow the broad stages. However, some links are mechanical or unclear: “after the injection well there is a geothermal zone” and “after finished the down process lets start with upper layer process” do not express the transitions smoothly. The conclusion repeats the general idea rather than summarising the process. Improve progression by grouping the underground stages together, then describing the surface equipment, and use clear references such as “the heated water” and “this steam” to connect steps.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “production well,” “condenser,” and “generator,” which helps identify the equipment. However, the range of accurate process language is limited, and several word choices or collocations make the meaning difficult to follow. “Cold warer” appears to be a spelling error for “cold water,” while “hot water steams” and “hot steams converted into electricity” are imprecise descriptions. “Crystal clear” is also an unsuitable phrase for a neutral process report. Choose precise verbs such as “is heated,” “rises,” “is converted into steam,” and “drives,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the sequence is generally understandable. However, control is inconsistent, especially in longer constructions. The opening “illustrates that how to produce” has an incorrect clause pattern, while “cold water collected and pumped it down” lacks a clear, correctly formed passive structure. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and verb forms, as in “the hot passing through the production well” and “whole process showes.” Punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent, including spaces before commas and a lowercase “it” beginning a paragraph. Build accuracy with clear passive sentences—for example, “Cold water is pumped down the injection well”—before attempting more complex structures.
