IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Overall, there are five steps starting from injection of cold water into the well and end with electricity generation. The are two main points (injection of cold water and the prodection of hot rocks in the well).
This process starts with injection of cold water into the well which is 4.5km deep and it contain a hot rocks which is also called geothermal zone which produce hot water.
After the production of hot water the water is pumped up toward condenser that produce stream which is than used to give the power to the turbine and the turbine rotates. With the rotation of turbine the electricity produced and when is is stored in generator. The generator is connects with electricity provider and then it provide electricity to all around its range.
So,the main products of this process is (geothermal zone and water) which produces stream and the steam is than use as a fuel to rotate terbine.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process and include several relevant stages, such as cold water entering a 4.5-km well, water being heated underground, and steam driving a turbine. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: the diagram shows a sequence of five numbered stages, but the main products are not “the geothermal zone and water”; electricity is the final output. Some details are also invented or misrepresented: the generator produces electricity rather than storing it, and the diagram does not show an electricity provider distributing power “all around its range.” To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the full transformation from cold water to electricity, then describe the stages accurately, including the production well and generator.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic structure, with an introduction, an overview, and a description of the process, and it generally follows the sequence from water injection to electricity generation. However, progression is weakened by unclear or repetitive statements. For example, the overview repeats the injection and heating points without summarising the complete process, while the final sentence returns to earlier stages rather than concluding clearly. Linking words such as “After” and “With the rotation” help show sequence, but some connections are awkward, and the long sentence beginning “After the production of hot water” combines several stages without clear boundaries. Organise the body into a few distinct stages and use precise references to show how each component leads to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection,” “production,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “geothermal zone,” which helps communicate the topic. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning unclear. For instance, “production of hot rocks” does not describe the process, “stream” is used where “steam” is intended, and “electricity provider” is not shown in the diagram. There are also repeated basic terms such as “produce” and “water,” and spelling errors including “prodection” and “terbine.” Build a more precise set of process verbs and technical nouns, and check spelling and collocations before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the reader can usually follow the broad sequence. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries occur frequently. Examples include “there are five steps … and end,” “it contain a hot rocks,” and “the electricity produced,” where the verb forms or agreement are incomplete or incorrect. The sentence beginning “After the production of hot water” also runs several clauses together, while “when is is stored” contains an unclear subject and repeated word. Practise forming accurate passive constructions for process descriptions, such as “water is pumped” and “steam is produced,” and separate stages into complete, controlled sentences.
