IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The information provided in the given diagram delineates the process of how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Overall, it is quite clear that the process consist of only five well organized steps, where each is own responsibility to processed next. The procedure is typically begin from keeping cold water into a big water tank and end with generating electricity from the circulation of a turbine through steam.

To commence with, the cold water has been placed into a substantial tank then this water is pumped down into a 4.5 kilometer under the earth using a pumping machine. Afterward, the cold water has been injected into well, by entered into a geothermal zone which hot the rocks in this process. In the next step, the hot rocks has been produced well and this hot water has been pumped up to the next stage.

In the subsequent way, in the second last stage, the hot water which is pumped up from the earth has been condene with help of condenser to make steam for turbine. Ultimately, in the final step, the turbine has been powered by steam to circulate and to pass the energy to the adjacent generator which is mainly responsible for producing electricity, additionally, this generator is powered by trubine to generate electricity and then this engergy has been distributed across the country using substantial towers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers the main stages and gives a clear overall account: cold water is pumped underground, heated as it passes through the geothermal zone, brought back up, and used to produce electricity. The 4.5-kilometre depth and the turbine–generator relationship are also reported. This meets the task well, although some details are less accurately or clearly expressed. In particular, the rocks do not themselves become the production well; rather, water heated by the hot rocks rises through that well. The condenser is described as making steam, but its role in the sequence could be stated more precisely. The final reference to electricity being distributed “across the country” is not shown; the diagram only depicts transmission lines and a pylon.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs that follow the process from the tank to electricity generation. Sequencing phrases such as “To commence with,” “In the next step,” and “Ultimately” help the reader follow the stages. However, some linking is mechanical or imprecise: “In the subsequent way” and “in the second last stage” do not clearly identify the sequence, and the overview’s “each is own responsibility to processed next” obscures how the stages connect. The final paragraph also repeats that the turbine powers the generator and produces electricity. More direct transitions and clearer references to each component would make the progression smoother and more cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

There is a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “pumped,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator,” and some less common choices such as “substantial” and “adjacent.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “the hot rocks has been produced well” confuses the rocks with the production well, while “condene” and “trubine” are misspelled. Phrases such as “circulation of a turbine through steam” and “subsequent way” are also difficult to interpret. Aim for standard technical collocations and use verbs that describe the diagram directly, such as water being heated, rising, and being converted into steam.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and longer sentences, and the overall sequence can usually be understood. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction are frequent enough to make some relationships unclear. Examples include “the process consist,” “the procedure is typically begin,” and “the hot rocks has been produced well”; these need corrected agreement and verb patterns. The sentence “Afterward, the cold water has been injected into well, by entered into a geothermal zone” combines an incorrect passive construction with an unclear clause. Articles and prepositions are also sometimes missing or misplaced, as in “into well” and “pumped down into a 4.5 kilometer under the earth.” Practise accurate past-simple or present-simple process descriptions and build shorter, controlled clauses before adding complexity.
