IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the processes of the production of electricity using geothermal energy step-by-step, such as cold water, the injection well, the production well, condenser and generator and turbine.
Overall, there are five steps of producing electricity. It is started with utilizing cold water and ended with the production of electricity which is powered by turbine.
The first step of prodicing electricity by using geothermal energy is filling cold water and pumping the water 4.5 kilometre down. Secondly, the water is supplied to the geothermal zone (hot rocks) through the injection well. In this stage water become hot. Thirdly, the hot water is pumped 4.5 kilometre up though the production well. The fourth step is making condenser and creating steam for the final stage. In the very last stage, the water get powered by steam and turbine and electricity is produced. Finally, the generator system is connected to the tower from where electricity is reached to the mass people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response identifies the process as a sequence and gives a clear overall direction, from cold water to electricity. It also includes relevant details such as the 4.5-kilometre depth, the geothermal zone, and the injection and production wells. However, some stages are not fully or accurately explained: the water is heated underground and then rises as hot water, while the condenser converts it to steam; the response instead says “making condenser” and later suggests that water is powered by steam and the turbine. The generator, rather than the water, is driven by the turbine. The account therefore covers the main stages, but some relationships between components remain unclear and the overview could more precisely summarise the transformation from water to steam to electricity.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a sensible sequence, with an introduction, an overview, and a description of the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Thirdly” help the reader follow the process, and the final reference to the generator provides a sense of completion. This meets the lower-band expectation of an overall coherent arrangement and shows some of the stronger progression associated with the next level. However, the repeated step-by-step framing becomes mechanical, and “Finally” follows “In the very last stage,” creating unnecessary repetition. Some links between ideas are also unclear, particularly the transition from the condenser to steam and then to the turbine. Use fewer repeated stage markers and connect each component’s function more explicitly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses relevant process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “injection well,” “production well,” “condenser,” and “generator,” which allows the reader to recognise the main equipment. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “making condenser,” “water get powered by steam,” and “electricity is reached to the mass people” do not express the intended technical relationships naturally. There are also spelling and word-form slips, such as “prodicing.” These issues sometimes make the description less clear, although the central topic remains understandable. Aim for precise process verbs and standard collocations, for example, “the condenser produces steam” and “the generator produces electricity,” rather than relying on general words such as “making” or “get.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is an attempt to use both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the sequence is generally understandable. Some sentences are controlled, such as “The diagram illustrates the processes of the production of electricity using geothermal energy.” However, errors in agreement, articles, and verb forms occur in several places: “water become hot,” “the water get powered,” and “It is started with utilizing cold water.” The sentence beginning “The first step … is filling cold water and pumping the water 4.5 kilometre down” also has an awkward grammatical construction, while “though the production well” appears to be a mistaken preposition. These errors do not usually prevent the reader from following the process, but they reduce accuracy. Practise consistent present-simple forms and clearer passive constructions, such as “Cold water is pumped down” and “The water is heated.”
