IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrate the geothermal power is used to provied the electrictiy.
Overall, Geothermal power plant depent on five steps. In the power plant prouduce the electricity is started cold water.
Firstly, Geothermal power plant create the electricity they are 5 differents ways then produce the electricity. First of all cold water pumped down almost 4.5 km in the earth. When cold water push under the earth, Injection well already there could water way of the geothermal zone (hot rocks).
secondly, when cold water in the hot rocks, Hot rocks cold water converted to hot water Futher more the production well pumped the hot water on the up side to move condenser part. Condenser produce the steam, Steam move in the turbine when steam enter the turbine. Turbine statred with powered by steam, turbain continuasly started and generator concted with the turbine. Turbine their power move the generator, then generator produces the electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as geothermal electricity production and include its main sequence: cold water is sent underground, heated by hot rocks, brought back up, and used to generate electricity. The reference to a depth of “almost 4.5 km” is also accurate. However, the overview is unclear: “depent on five steps” does not explain the key transformation from cold water to steam and then electricity. Some details are misrepresented or difficult to interpret, especially “hot rocks cold water converted to hot water”; the rocks heat the water rather than the water converting the rocks. The account also does not clearly explain the condenser’s role in producing steam. A more precise overview and clearer descriptions of each stage would make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a recognisable sequence, supported by “Firstly” and “secondly,” and the response broadly moves from the underground wells to the turbine and generator. This gives the reader some sense of the process. However, the organisation is weakened by an unclear overview and by long, loosely connected sentences, such as “Turbine statred with powered by steam, turbain continuasly started and generator concted with the turbine.” Several ideas are repeated, including the turbine being powered by steam and the generator producing electricity. Paragraphing is limited, and some links between stages are hard to follow. Use one paragraph for the overview and separate the process into clearly ordered stages, with accurate linking phrases and less repetition.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “production well,” “condenser,” “steam,” and “generator.” These terms show awareness of the diagram’s subject. However, the range and control are limited, and frequent spelling errors—such as “electrictiy,” “pumped,” and “concted”—make the description less clear. Some word combinations are also unnatural, for example “move condenser part” and “turbine their power move the generator.” Choose precise process verbs and use them consistently: water is pumped down, heated, brought up, converted into steam, and drives the turbine. Check spelling carefully, especially for the technical terms that carry the main information.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts both simple and longer sentences, and the sequence is sometimes expressed with clauses beginning “When” and “then.” However, grammatical control is weak: errors occur frequently in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “The diagram illustrate” lacks subject–verb agreement, while “Overall, Geothermal power plant depent on five steps” is missing an article and has an unclear structure. The sentence beginning “When cold water in the hot rocks” is incomplete, and several later clauses run together without clear punctuation. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with controlled clauses. Check that each sentence has a clear subject and verb, and use consistent present-simple forms for describing the process.
