IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given process diagram provide how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.it have many process include it.
Overall, there are all together five main process to form electricity.Cold water is the first stage to make electricity while it ended up with generator turbine process.
Firstly,Cold water go down 4.5 km through the injection well to pumped the cold water down.while it goes through three injection well straight the geothermal zone hot rockks.Again, the third process is the production well to pumped up the hot water.
After the production well process the hot water goes to Condenser which is the second last stage to steam the hot water. As well as the final process who play the important role to generate electricity. Finally the steam went to to generator turbine which have two conditon such as one is to supply the steam into turbine and another one is to store energy in generator and it supply the electricity to different poll and house hold use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as a sequence and include several key stages: cold water is sent down the injection well, heated by hot rocks, brought up through the production well, and used to produce electricity. The 4.5 km depth is also reported accurately. However, the overview is unclear and says there are five processes without summarising the main transformation from cold water to steam and then electricity. Some details are misreported: the water passes through the geothermal zone, not “three injection well,” and the turbine drives the generator; steam does not go “to generator turbine.” The claim that energy is stored and electricity supplied to houses is not shown. A clearer overview and more accurate account of the final stages would make the summary more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic sequence, using “Firstly,” “After,” and “Finally,” and the paragraphs broadly move from the underground stages to the equipment at the surface. This gives the reader some sense of the process. However, progression is weakened by unclear links and references, such as “it ended up with generator turbine process” and “the final process who play the important role.” The overview also repeats the idea of stages without clearly connecting them to the process’s outcome. Some transitions are awkward or inaccurate, including “As well as,” which does not clearly link the condenser to the turbine. Organise the stages in a straightforward sequence and use precise references such as “the heated water” and “the resulting steam” to make connections clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “production well,” “condenser,” and “steam,” which helps identify the main components. However, the range is limited and several word choices or combinations are inaccurate enough to make parts difficult to understand. For example, “three injection well” does not describe the diagram, while “generator turbine process” and “store energy in generator” do not express the equipment’s functions clearly. There are also spelling errors such as “rockks” and “conditon,” and informal or imprecise phrases such as “different poll and house hold use.” Aim for accurate technical collocations and use verbs such as “heat,” “convert,” and “drive” to describe the stages.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts both simple and longer sentences, and the sequence is generally understandable despite frequent grammatical problems. Errors in agreement and verb forms appear in “The given process diagram provide” and “Cold water go down,” while “to pumped” is an incorrect infinitive form. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also poorly controlled: several sentences run together after full stops, and commas are often followed immediately by capitalised words without a space. The final sentence combines several ideas with unclear structure, making the relationship between steam, the turbine, and the generator difficult to follow. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, use “to pump” or passive forms such as “is pumped,” and separate each stage into a complete sentence.
