IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
First of all we use cold water for generation of electricity then my second step is that we dig a hole which is approximately 4.5 km. After that next step is cold water pump down in rocks where the temperature of Earth is very high where we condense water hot. In result water become boil and cold water change into hot water. After we dig again hole which is connected to condenser when water reach in condenser it convert into steam then next steam run turbine which is powdered by steam .After this process turbine runs generator in output. At the end we reach at main output which is electricity. This is the way which is use for production of electricity from geothermal power plant. We use electricity for home appliance such as fans , bulbs and electric motors etc. This process is very complicated .Most of the countries use geothermal power plant and generate electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main sequence: cold water is sent underground, heated, brought back up, converted to steam, and used to drive a turbine and generator. The reference to the 4.5 km depth is also accurate. However, the account only partly covers the diagram and does not clearly summarise its main features in an overview. Some details are misreported: the water passes through hot rocks and is heated there; it is not condensed underground, and the diagram shows the production well returning hot water to a condenser at the surface. The claims about household uses and most countries using geothermal plants are not shown. Focus on accurately describing the illustrated stages and avoid adding unsupported information.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response follows a broadly chronological order, and transitions such as “After that” and “At the end” help the reader recognise the intended sequence. However, the account is presented as one continuous paragraph, with no clear overview separating the general process from its stages. Several transitions are repetitive or awkward, including “After that next step” and “After this process,” and the sequence becomes difficult to follow where the underground heating and condensation are described. Organise the response into an introduction and overview, followed by a clearly ordered description of the stages. Use linking phrases selectively and make each stage connect explicitly to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “cold water,” “condenser,” “steam,” “turbine,” and “generator,” so the reader can identify the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the process unclear. For example, “we dig a hole” is informal and imprecise for describing a well, while “water become boil” does not express the intended change naturally. “Powdered by steam” also appears to be an incorrect word choice for the turbine’s operation. Use precise process terms and avoid conversational phrasing such as “First of all we use” and “we dig again.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts to connect ideas in longer sentences, for example, “when water reach in condenser it convert into steam,” but these structures are often faulty. Errors in subject–verb agreement (“water reach,” “it convert”), verb forms (“water become boil”), articles, and sentence boundaries occur frequently and can make the sequence harder to understand. The repeated use of “we” also produces an unsuitable first-person account rather than a neutral description of the diagram. Practise accurate present-simple passive forms for process descriptions, such as “cold water is pumped down” and “steam is produced,” and check agreement, articles, and punctuation in each sentence.
