IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
This diagram is illustrating the complex mechanism of power generation by utilizing heat energy from the Earth.
It comprises of five major steps, each playing a crucial role in electricity generation.Mostly, this process uses cold water which is stored in a large container above the ground, fromwhere it is pumped down to the injection well formed under ground at a depth of almost 4.5km. After reaching there, it is passed to thr production well through geothermal zone which is composed of hot rocks causing raise in water temperature. After getting into the production pump, this hot water is pumped to another large container above the ground named as condenser. In this chamber, temperature of water reduces and the steam released by decline in temperature is transferred to turbinrs through a pipe. The pressure of this hot air leads to the movement of turbines that activates generators and produce electricity. Through this whole series of raection, we get the enerygy for our d

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main stages, including water being pumped underground, heated by hot rocks, returned to the surface, and used to drive equipment that generates electricity. The depth of about 4.5 km is also reported accurately. However, the overview is not sufficiently clear, and some process details are misinterpreted: the condenser releases steam, rather than cooling the water so that falling temperature produces steam, and the diagram does not show a production pump or say that the steam is hot air under pressure. The response also ends with an incomplete statement, so the final outcome is not fully summarised. To strengthen the report, give a concise overview of the full sequence and describe each stage using only information shown in the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The stages are generally presented in a sensible order, and sequencing phrases such as “After reaching there” and “After getting into” help the reader follow the process. However, the response is written as one long paragraph, with several stages crowded into lengthy sentences. Some links are unclear, particularly the transition from the production well to the condenser and then to the turbine. The final phrase, “we get the enerygy for our d,” is incomplete and interrupts the progression. Organise the report into a brief introduction and overview followed by a clearly sequenced description, using full stops to separate the main stages and more precise references to the equipment.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” and “generators,” which helps convey the subject. There is also an attempt to use more formal wording, such as “crucial role” and “mechanism.” However, several word choices are inaccurate or awkward: “production pump” should be “production well,” “turbines” is misspelled as “turbinrs,” and “hot air” does not accurately describe the steam. Spelling errors such as “raection” and “enerygy,” along with the unfinished final word, reduce clarity. Prefer precise labels from the diagram and check spelling; simpler, accurate terms are more effective than elaborate but unsuitable phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mixture of sentence forms, including a relative clause in “geothermal zone which is composed of hot rocks” and a sequence of time clauses. However, control is uneven. For example, “It comprises of five major steps” has an incorrect verb pattern, while “causing raise in water temperature” lacks the correct article and form. The sentence beginning “In this chamber” also joins several ideas without clear punctuation, and “turbines that activates generators and produce electricity” has inconsistent agreement. The final sentence is incomplete. Use shorter, complete sentences to describe each stage, check subject–verb agreement, and review articles and verb forms in complex clauses.
