IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the production of electricity through geothermal energy.
Overall, this is the cyclic process with five in total steps. It get started from cold water and passed from series of other processes and get ended at Generator.
Looking at the main details, initially, Cold Water, it get pumped towards downward till 4.5 km where other step begins, The injection well from there the water go in the east side and passed from (hot rock) and reached at The production well which is the 3rd step.
Moreover, Hot Water get pumped up with 4.5 km which actually produced Condenser and because of Condensor the steam generated and fourth step get finished here. Finally, final step begins from here where Steam went to the turbine and it get powered afterwards Generator it get powered by Turbine and finally it get produced electricity after that electricity transferred to the poles, from there it get supplied to the electric companies.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as geothermal electricity production and include its main stages: cold water is sent underground, heated by hot rocks, brought back up, converted to steam, and used to drive a turbine and generator. The overview also recognises a sequence, and the 4.5 km depth is reported. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the water is not pumped down “till 4.5 km where other step begins” so much as through the injection well to the geothermal zone, and the diagram does not say that electricity is supplied to electric companies. The overview calls the process cyclic, although it is shown as a sequence. Clarifying the overview and describing the conversion stages more precisely would make the account more complete and accurate.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a chronological description of the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “initially,” “Moreover,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. However, some links are mechanical or confusing, particularly “the injection well from there” and “fourth step get finished here.” The overview says the process ends at the generator, while the final sentence adds electricity transmission, so the endpoint is not consistently framed. Grouping the underground stages together and then explaining the surface machinery in a separate paragraph would improve progression. Use clear references such as “the water” and “this steam” rather than repeatedly restarting with stage labels.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which helps convey the diagram’s subject. There are also attempts to describe movement and transformation, such as “pumped up” and “steam generated.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural: “cyclic process” does not fit the one-way sequence shown, “passed from series of other processes” is awkward, and “electric companies” is not supported by the diagram. Repetition of “get” and “step” also limits the range. Choose precise process verbs and standard collocations, such as “flows through,” “is heated,” and “drives the generator,” to make the description more fluent and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and longer sentence forms, and the sequence is generally understandable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to make several sentences awkward. Examples include “It get started,” “the water go,” and “Hot Water get pumped up”; these should use passive forms consistently, such as “It starts” or “The water is pumped down.” The sentence beginning “initially, Cold Water, it get pumped” is also fragmented, while “because of Condensor the steam generated” lacks a clear grammatical structure. Practise forming accurate passive clauses for process descriptions and check subject–verb agreement and articles. More controlled sentence patterns would make the stages easier to follow.
