IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the production of electricity from geothermal energy.

Overall, the process consist of 5 stages begininning with collecting cold water from its sources to end with producing electricity from geothermal energy.

Initially, the first stage is to collect cold water from its sources and transfer it underground (approximately 4.5 killometers deep) by pumping it. In the second stages it contains an injection wall where pumped cold water gets transferred from the geothermal zone which is also known as hot rocks. In the third stage; now cold water became hot water because it passed through hot rocks. Along with that, hot water gets transferred to production wall and then gets pumped up and transferred to a big condenser. In the ending stages, hot water is now became steam which is transferred to turbine and then generator where turbine gets powerd by steam and generator get powerd by turbine and produced enegry. It was the process of production of electricity from geothermal energy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the diagram’s purpose and give a broad account of the main sequence, including water being pumped underground, heated by hot rocks, returned to the surface, and used to generate electricity. The reference to a depth of about 4.5 km is also accurate. However, the overview says there are five stages without clearly summarising the key transformation from cold water to steam and then electricity. Some details are unclear or inaccurate: the injection well does not transfer water “from the geothermal zone”; rather, water passes through the hot-rock zone to the production well. The condenser’s role in producing steam could also be stated more precisely. A clearer overview and more accurate explanation of each stage would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and a chronological description. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “In the third stage,” and “In the ending stages” help the reader follow the process, and the final sentence returns to the topic. This provides a coherent progression. However, the stage-by-stage organisation is sometimes mechanical, and the long final section combines several steps that would be clearer as separate sentences. Some links are also confusing, particularly “In the second stages it contains an injection wall,” which makes the relationship between the stage and the equipment unclear. Use more precise references to the water and machinery, and group the underground and surface stages into clearer paragraphs to improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection,” “production,” “geothermal zone,” “hot rocks,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator.” These terms show an adequate range for describing the diagram, and the main meaning is generally understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal: “collect cold water from its sources” is not shown in the diagram, “injection wall” and “production wall” should be “well,” and “big condenser” is imprecise. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “killometers,” “powerd,” and “enegry,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for consistent technical terms and more precise process verbs, such as “pump,” “heat,” “convert,” and “drive.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, and the sequence is usually understandable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to make some sentences awkward. For example, “the process consist of 5 stages begininning” needs a correctly formed verb and a clearer clause structure; “cold water became hot water” should use a consistent present tense; and “hot water is now became steam” combines incompatible verb forms. “The second stages it contains” is also an incomplete or poorly joined construction. Use the present simple consistently for a process diagram, check singular–plural agreement, and divide long sentences into shorter clauses. More accurate control of these patterns would make the description easier to read.
