IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The pictorial veiw shows how current is generated from the geothermal energy.
Overveiw, there is evident that geothermal power plant involves five stages for the production of eletricity. The first step is getting a cold water source which is 4.5km away from the injection well. The cold water pumped down to the injection well which would pass into the hot rocks for production to take place.
However, the geothermal zone move into the well for production to the condenser where hot water is pumped up which is similarly in length to the cold water. The condenser receives the vapour from hot water.
The steam pass through a medium to power the turbine, whereas the high pole transformer passes current flow to the generator. Both the voltage from the steam in the turbine and that of the generator comes to together in a circuit to produce eletricity. Although, the two wells which are located at the groundlevel does not interfare with eachother but rather follows the process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as electricity generation and mention several relevant stages, including cold water entering the injection well, passing through hot rocks, and steam powering a turbine. However, the account is only partly accurate and the overview is not sufficiently clear. The 4.5 km figure describes the depth of the injection well, not the distance between the water source and the well. The production well carries heated water up to the surface; it is not the geothermal zone that moves into the well. The description also misstates the later stages: the turbine drives the generator, and the diagram does not show a transformer or two voltage sources combining in a circuit. A clearer overview and accurate sequencing of the main stages would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has separate paragraphs and broadly follows the process from water input to electricity production, so the reader can recognise an intended sequence. However, progression becomes unclear in the later paragraphs, particularly in “the geothermal zone move into the well for production to the condenser” and the explanation of the turbine, pole transformer and generator. Connectors such as “However,” “whereas” and “Although” do not express the relationships needed here, and some references—such as “which” and “Both”—are difficult to interpret. Organise the report into a brief overview followed by clearly ordered stages, using simple sequence markers such as “Next” and “Finally” only where they clarify the process.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “steam” and “turbine,” which helps identify the equipment. However, the range and control of wording are limited, and several choices make the process difficult to understand. “Current is generated from the geothermal energy” is imprecise; “electricity is generated using geothermal energy” is more natural. “The geothermal zone move into the well” uses an unsuitable verb, while “high pole transformer” and “voltage from the steam” do not accurately describe the diagram. Spelling errors such as “veiw,” “Overveiw,” “eletricity” and “interfare” are also noticeable. Use precise process verbs and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts longer sentences and some subordinate clauses, but complex constructions are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the process hard to follow. For example, “there is evident that” lacks a grammatical subject and should be “it is evident that”; “The steam pass” needs subject–verb agreement (“steam passes”); and “the two wells … does not” should use “do not.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also inconsistent, as in “turbine, whereas” and “Although, the.” Some clauses combine several stages without clear grammatical links. Build accuracy with short, complete sentences first, then add controlled clauses, checking agreement, articles and punctuation.
