IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of producing electricity in geothermal power plant .

Overall, the process consists of several stages, begining with the cold water pumped underground and ending with producing electricity by generator. The heat from underground rocks is used to convert water into steam .

Initially, the cold water is stores above ground before it is pumped 4.5km downwards passing through the injection well. After that, it passes by geothermal zone consist of hot rocks which converts the cold water into hot water. Once the water crossed the production well, it pumped up into condenser where steam is produced.

subsequently, the steam flows through pipe and circulate around the turbine. Finally , the rotating turbine it powers the generator and produces electricity .The electricity is then supplied to power grid through lines .In this way , the geothermal energy is converted into electric energy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main sequence from cold-water storage through the underground wells to steam, the turbine and electricity generation, and your overview correctly identifies the use of heat from hot rocks. The 4.5 km depth and the roles of the injection and production wells are also reported accurately. However, some details are unclear or imprecise: the water is heated as it passes through the geothermal zone, rather than the rocks directly “convert” it, and the diagram shows the turbine driving the generator, not electricity being supplied to a “power grid.” The response is also five words below the required minimum. Develop the process description a little further and keep each statement closely tied to the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall progression, with an overview followed by the underground stages and then the equipment that generates electricity. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “After that,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process, and the paragraph breaks broadly support this structure. This is already a coherent arrangement, but some linking is mechanical or inconsistent: “subsequently” begins a sentence without a space after the comma, while “In this way” repeats the conclusion rather than adding a new stage. Improve the flow by connecting related steps more smoothly and using consistent sentence punctuation. Clearer links between the heating stage and the production well would also strengthen progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator,” so the reader can identify the main components. There are also useful attempts at more specific wording, such as “pumped 4.5km downwards.” However, several choices or forms are inaccurate or awkward: “stores” for “stored,” “passes by” for water moving through the zone, and “circulate around the turbine” for steam flowing through it. “Power grid” is not shown in the diagram, which only depicts transmission lines. Aim for precise process collocations and avoid adding technical details not supported by the visual.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including a relative clause in “geothermal zone consist of hot rocks which converts…” and a time clause beginning “Once the water crossed…”. The sequence remains understandable, but some errors in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction reduce accuracy. For example, “the cold water is stores” should use a past participle, “it pumped up” needs an auxiliary, and “the rotating turbine it powers the generator” has an unnecessary subject pronoun and an unclear clause structure. There are also inconsistent spaces around punctuation. Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions and check that each clause has a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
