IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given diagram examine the geothermal energy utilize to produce electricity. image shows geothermal power plant and proper procedure to produce electricity with the help of cold water.

picture evaluate the earth surface Hight and provide information about depth of cold water pumped down. there is 4.5 km depth underground the injection well. when cold water touched geothermal zone ( hot rocks) then hot water pumped up and go in to condenser then they create steam . this whole cycle make powered by turbine and produce electricity.

overall there is a generator turbine which produce electricity after this recycle and through electricity to geo thermal powerplant towers. then the tower provide electricity to all city and town area for peoples utilization.

this image is describe process of electricity production from cold water convert to hot water and make steam then convert electricity with the help of generator turbine. there is mostly water is relevant with each other just difference is hot and cold. it include main features is water , generator turbine.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the central process: cold water is sent underground, heated by hot rocks, brought back up, and used to generate electricity. The 4.5 km depth and the roles of the turbine and generator are also mentioned, so the response includes several relevant stages. However, the account is only partly complete and some details are unclear or inaccurate. For example, the condenser is said to create steam, whereas the diagram shows steam released there; the final claim that towers distribute electricity to cities and towns is not supported by the diagram. The overview also repeats the water-to-electricity sequence rather than clearly summarising the process as a whole. Describe each stage in order and avoid adding information not shown.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: the response begins by introducing the diagram, then describes underground water movement, and ends with a general summary. Basic sequencing words such as “when,” “then,” and “after this” help show the process order. However, progression is not consistently clear because several ideas are repeated across the opening, middle, and final paragraph. The sentence beginning “overall” introduces the generator and turbine after they have already been mentioned, while the claim about towers and city distribution interrupts the process description. Some references, such as “this whole cycle” and “this image,” are vague. Use one paragraph for the stages in sequence and a concise overview, with clear links between each step.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “steam,” and “turbine,” which helps communicate the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or combinations are inaccurate or unnatural, sometimes making the meaning difficult to follow. For instance, “the diagram examine” and “picture evaluate” do not express the intended meaning, while “powered by turbine” is an awkward description of the generator’s role. “Geo thermal powerplant towers” also mislabels the transmission pylon and plant. Aim for precise process verbs and standard technical terms, and avoid repeating broad words such as “make” and “produce” when a more exact verb is available.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to connect stages in longer sentences, for example, “when cold water touched geothermal zone … then hot water pumped up,” and it uses some simple statements to describe the equipment. However, sentence structures are limited, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries occur frequently. Examples include “The given diagram examine,” “when cold water touched,” and “there is a generator turbine which produce electricity.” Several clauses are joined without clear punctuation, making the sequence harder to understand. Practise forming accurate present-simple passive sentences for processes, such as “Cold water is pumped down the injection well,” and check subject–verb agreement and articles when editing.
