IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

This illustration illustrates the procedure involved in the manufacturing of electricity through the geothermal energy.

Overall, the whole procedure is consist of five distinct steps, and two of them occurs underground which are laid through a geothermal zone. Additionally, the remaining three phases work on the ground.

Starting from a container, contains cold water that pumped down 4.5 km into the soil toward the injection well. Then the cold water moved forward to the geothermal zone which also known as hot rocks, after moving through this, water reached to the production well, which allows hot water to pumped up to the condenser.

Moreover, on the ground, the condenser convert hot water into the steam which moved to the generator turbine which have to additional portions, the first one powered by steam coming from the condenser which is linked to the next part which is powered by turbine and finally produces electricity which supplied to the tower.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main sequence from cold-water storage through the underground wells and geothermal zone to steam-driven machinery and electricity generation. The overview identifies five stages and distinguishes underground from surface activity, while the 4.5 km depth and the hot-rock zone are accurately reported. This gives the reader a sound account of the process. Some details, however, are unclear or imprecise: the water is pumped down the injection well, rather than “toward” it, and the condenser produces steam from the heated water. The final description also confuses the turbine and generator by calling the turbine’s parts “additional portions.” To make the account more complete and precise, explain clearly that steam powers the turbine, which drives the generator to produce electricity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction and overview are followed by the underground stages and then the surface equipment. Sequencing expressions such as “Starting from” and “Moreover” help signal movement through the process, and the reader can generally follow the stages. However, the final sentence combines the condenser, turbine and generator into one long, difficult-to-follow sequence. Some links are also imprecise: “which” in “which allows hot water” has an unclear reference, and “the first one” and “the next part” do not clearly identify the turbine and generator. Use separate sentences for the steam, turbine and generator stages, and refer to each component by name to make the progression more consistently clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “injection well,” “production well,” “condenser” and “powered by steam.” These terms show awareness of the diagram’s technical subject, and the meaning is generally recoverable. Some choices are inaccurate or awkward, however: “manufacturing of electricity” is less natural than language describing electricity generation, and “container” is less precise than “tank.” The phrase “generator turbine” also blurs two separate components, while “tower” is an imprecise label for the transmission pylon. Aim for precise technical nouns and natural collocations, and avoid using near-synonyms where the diagram names distinct pieces of equipment.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including a general overview and longer clauses describing the process. However, errors in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction are frequent enough to make some relationships difficult to follow. For example, “the whole procedure is consist” should use a correctly formed verb, and “two of them occurs” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “a container, contains cold water that pumped down,” the clause structure and passive verb form are incomplete; similarly, “the condenser convert” and “hot water to pumped up” contain agreement and verb-form problems. The final sentence is also structurally overloaded. Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions and build shorter sentences around one stage at a time.
