IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process diagram demonstrates the working of geothermal power plant for the production of electricity.

Overall, it consist of 5 steps. Start with the cold water transfers into well and ends on production of electricity which given to electricity supply towers. After sending cold water into the injection well and passing through the production well, it then pumped up to the condenser. It transfer steam into turbine which help to rotate turbine and run generator to produce electricity.

Start with the stored cold water which push down into the earth around 4.5 km depth to the injection well by the help of pumps. After receiving the cold water in well, it then passes through hot rocks named as Geothermal zone and at the end, hot water is collected in the production well where it pumped up to the condenser.

A condenser then vaporized that hot water received from the production well to produce steam. This water steam then transferred to the turbine which powered a turbine and help to rotate it. A turbine is linked with generator which assist to run the generator and it produce electricity. The electricity produce from the generator provides to the towers which distribute electricity in different areas.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main sequence from cold-water injection to electricity generation, and the overview identifies the start and end of the process. The 4.5 km depth is accurately reported, and the geothermal zone, production well, condenser, turbine and generator are all included. This gives the account a clear factual basis. Some details, however, are unclear or inaccurate: the diagram shows steam powering the turbine, but you say it “help[s] to rotate” the turbine in a way that makes the mechanism confusing, and the final electricity is transmitted through power lines to a pylon rather than “towers.” The overview also says there are five steps without clearly distinguishing the stages. More precise reporting of the energy conversion and transmission would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the process in sequence. The progression from underground water movement to steam and electricity is generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “After” and “A condenser then” help signal stages. However, the overview repeats much of the process description, and some links are mechanically repeated, especially “which” and “then.” Referencing is occasionally unclear: “it” in “it then pumped up” and “This water steam” make the subject difficult to identify. Organise the overview around the overall transformation, then use the body paragraphs to describe each stage once, with clearer references to water, steam, the turbine and the generator.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser” and “generator,” which helps convey the diagram’s technical stages. Some attempts at more specific wording are useful, such as “transfers” and “vaporized,” but several choices or combinations are inaccurate or unnatural: “electricity supply towers,” “water steam,” and “powered a turbine” do not describe the diagram clearly. Repetition of “produce” and “electricity” also limits flexibility. Aim for precise process collocations, for example, water is pumped down, heated by hot rocks, and converted into steam; steam drives a turbine, which in turn powers a generator. This would improve precision without requiring more complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including sequencing clauses such as “After receiving the cold water…” and a relative clause in “which assist to run the generator.” However, errors in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction are frequent enough to make some relationships unclear. Examples include “it consist of 5 steps,” “it then pumped up,” and “it produce electricity”; these need forms such as “consists,” “is then pumped,” and “it produces.” The sentence beginning “After sending cold water…” also has an unclear subject, while “which help to rotate turbine” lacks clear agreement and article use. Practise accurate passive forms for processes and check subject–verb agreement, articles and complete clause structure. Greater control of these patterns would make your sequence easier to understand.
