IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagrams demonstrates the process of producing electricity through geothermal energy. It is defined in 5 steps through which electricity is produced.

In the begining the cold water is sent 4.5km under the surface towards the injection well.In secound step is pumped forward and passes through geometrical zone over the hot rocks and reaches to the production well.afterwards the hot water is pumped upwards because of which the water converts into steam.

In last stages the steam is sent forward froim the condenser and it reaches to turbine which is powered by steam. Moreover it passes through the generator which is powered by turbine thus produces electricity from it .

In conclusion It is a detailed diagram which illustrates the process of making electricity through geothermal energy in which water is used as main raw material through which the wholke cycle is running it pumped through several stages and in the end the result comes out with pure electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main process and include several key stages: cold water is sent down the injection well, heated underground, brought up through the production well, and used to generate electricity. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear. The water is not described as being pumped “forward” in a second step; it travels through the geothermal zone and is then pumped upward. You also say the hot water converts into steam before reaching the condenser, whereas the diagram shows steam being released at the condenser. The overview is weakened by the vague conclusion about a “detailed diagram” and “pure electricity.” To strengthen the report, give a concise overview of the full sequence and describe each stage precisely, including the turbine driving the generator.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a generally understandable sequence, with separate paragraphs for the underground stages and the final electricity-generation stages. Connectors such as “In the beginning,” “afterwards,” and “In last stages” help signal progression, and the reader can follow the broad process. This meets the lower-band expectation of an overall coherent arrangement and shows some movement towards more controlled progression. However, the numbered sequence is not consistently clear: “In secound step is pumped forward” has no clear subject, and “Moreover it passes through the generator” makes the movement between turbine and generator difficult to follow. The conclusion repeats the process rather than adding a useful summary. Use clear stage references and ensure each pronoun has an unmistakable referent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which allows you to cover the main components. There is also some attempt to vary wording with phrases such as “sent,” “pumped,” and “reaches.” However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or awkward, including “geometrical zone” for “geothermal zone,” “sent forward,” and “pure electricity.” Spelling errors such as “begining,” “secound,” “froim,” and “wholke” are noticeable and reduce precision. Aim for accurate technical terms and natural process collocations, for example “flows through the geothermal zone” and “steam drives the turbine.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a sequence linked with “because of which” and a final clause beginning “thus.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between stages unclear. For example, “The diagrams demonstrates” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “In secound step is pumped forward” is missing a clear subject and has an incomplete sentence structure. The sentence beginning “In last stages” also lacks an article, and punctuation is often missing after sentence boundaries, as in “energy. It” and “well.In.” These issues fit a pattern of limited structural control, particularly when you attempt complex sentences. Build accurate short sentences first, then combine them with clear clauses and consistent punctuation.
