IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given process diagram elucidates the mass manufacturing of geothermal power plant . The process is a joint venture of human and machines which work togather for a singal final product .

Overall, it can be seen that mass producation of power plant is carried out by the more then five distinctive steps . Additionally , the process start cold water and end at the generator and turbine for a final product . Furthermore , all these step is very important and connected with each other .

Talking about initial step , the first part is cold water , the followed by second step distance 4.5 km and the injection well , come then geothermal zone (hot rocks ) cold water pumped down and hot water pumped up , and then the producation well . Furthermore , all these process complete almost half of the total procdure .

Pouring some light on finalizing step , the final product is very critical get to the final product . The finalizing product is obtained by condenser the process steam , Turbine (powerd by steam ) , Generator ( powerd by turbine and produces electricity) with connected geothermal power plant . Hence , a finalizing product the process different phases the mass manufacturing of power plant .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the diagram as a process and mention several relevant components, including the 4.5 km depth, injection and production wells, geothermal zone, condenser, turbine and generator. However, the account only partially explains how these stages connect. The overview says the process ends “at the generator and turbine,” although the generator is the final electricity-producing component, and the sequence is not clearly summarised. The description of the first half is especially difficult to follow: it does not clearly state that cold water travels down the injection well, is heated by hot rocks, and returns to the surface through the production well. Focus on accurately describing the complete flow and give a concise overview of its main transformation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is divided into an introduction, an overview and two body paragraphs, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Talking about initial step” signal an attempt to organise the stages. Nevertheless, progression is often unclear because several steps are compressed into long, loosely connected sentences. For example, “the first part is cold water, the followed by second step distance 4.5 km and the injection well” does not make the relationship between the water, distance and well clear. The repeated use of “Furthermore” and “final product” also makes cohesion mechanical, while the final paragraph repeats ideas rather than clearly completing the sequence. Use one paragraph for the underground stages and another for steam, the turbine and electricity, with precise links between steps.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “turbine” and “generator,” which helps identify the diagram’s components. However, the range is limited by repeated or unsuitable expressions such as “mass manufacturing,” “final product” and “finalizing product”; these do not naturally describe electricity generation. Several spelling errors, including “togather,” “singal,” “producation” and “procdure,” also reduce clarity. Some phrases, such as “joint venture of human and machines,” are not supported by the diagram and sound unnatural in this context. Build a more precise process vocabulary and use verbs such as “pump,” “heat,” “convert” and “drive” to explain what happens at each stage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and longer sentence forms, and the opening overview shows an effort to summarise the process. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and frequent errors make relationships between stages difficult to understand. Examples include “The process start cold water,” “all these step is very important,” and “the first part is cold water, the followed by second step.” These contain problems with verb forms, agreement and sentence construction. Articles and prepositions are also often missing or misplaced, as in “by condenser the process steam.” Aim first for accurate, complete sentences with a clear subject and verb—for example, “Cold water is pumped down the injection well”—then connect them with simple sequencing language.
