IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates how electricity is produced through geothermal energy in the geothermal plant.
Overall, it is clearly seen from the diagram that there are major five steps for electricity production which started from cold water and ended with generator which is powered by turbine and produces electricity.
At the first step, the cold water pumped down and it travels about 4.5 km to reach for the next step. In the second step, the injection well pass the water by geothermal zone which contains hot rocks. In the next step, the production well pupmed the water which is hot due to the hot rocks.
Furthermore, in the fourth step, the condenser pass steam to the turbine. Lastly, the steam is passed to the generator which is powdered by turbine and produces electricity. Therefore, the generator supply electricity to the tower. So, this is how electricity is produced after completing these five steps.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as a sequence from cold water to electricity and include several key features: the 4.5 km depth, the hot-rock geothermal zone, the production well, and the turbine-generator. The overview also gives the reader the general start and end points. However, some stages are not described accurately or clearly. In particular, the condenser releases steam; it does not pass steam to the turbine, and the steam powers the turbine, which in turn drives the generator. The description of water travelling through the injection well and geothermal zone is also imprecise. To strengthen the response, explain the transformation from cold water to hot water and then steam, and distinguish the five numbered stages from the final electricity generation and transmission.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by a chronological account, with markers such as “At the first step,” “In the next step,” and “Lastly.” This makes the process easy to follow in broad terms. However, the sequence markers are somewhat mechanical, and the stages are not always linked precisely to the diagram. For example, “in the fourth step, the condenser pass steam to the turbine” combines two separate actions, while the final sentences repeat the idea that the generator produces electricity. Use paragraphing to separate the overview from the detailed stages, and connect each stage by describing what happens to the water or steam as it moves through the system.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” and “turbine,” which is appropriate for this diagram. The range is adequate, and the main meaning remains understandable. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, however: “pass the water by geothermal zone” and “pass steam to the turbine” do not describe the actions naturally, while “powered” is repeated in the overview and conclusion. There are also spelling errors in “pupmed” and “powdered.” Aim for precise process verbs and check spelling carefully; terms such as “pump,” “heat,” “release,” and “drive” can describe the stages more accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including the overview clause “which is powered by turbine and produces electricity” and the concluding “Therefore” sentence. The sequence is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. In “the cold water pumped down,” the passive verb needs “is”; “the injection well pass” has a subject–verb agreement error; and “the production well pupmed the water” uses an incorrect verb form and spelling. Articles are also missing in phrases such as “reach for the next step” and “by geothermal zone.” These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the process, but they limit accuracy. Practise passive forms for process descriptions and check agreement and articles in each sentence.
