IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In the figure, the process of procduction of electricity discribes by the geothermal power plant. The production is starting from a storage of cold water, here the water decends in the Earth crust about 4.5 km. When the wate reaches at the Earth geothermal zone where hot rocks settle down in the tunnel which rise the temperature of water. The water boils and the liquid form of water turns into water vapours which is the state of gas.

The water vapours go out from the other tunnel where the vapours condense and the steam goes to the main part of production where the generator turbine powered bt steam and it produces electricity. Then it delivers to the utility pole where the electric delivery lines are dividing and the electricity is giving to whole city. This whole process tells how electriciti is producing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the general subject and describe the main route from cold-water storage, down into the ground, and back up towards the electricity-generating equipment. However, the account is incomplete and includes important inaccuracies: the water is heated in the geothermal zone, but the diagram does not say it boils there; steam is produced at the condenser, rather than the vapours condensing there; and the generator produces electricity, while the turbine is powered by steam. The claim that electricity is delivered to a whole city is not shown. There is no clear overview of the process’s key stages. The response is also 8 words below the required minimum. To improve, report the five stages accurately and avoid adding unsupported details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The stages are presented in a broadly chronological order, and words such as “When,” “where,” and “Then” help signal movement through the process. This gives the reader a basic sense of progression. However, the response is one continuous paragraph, and several links between ideas are unclear. For example, “where the vapours condense and the steam goes to the main part” makes the relationship between the condenser and steam difficult to follow. The final sentence repeats the general purpose rather than providing a concise overview. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and the detailed stages, and connect each stage explicitly—for example, explain that heated water rises to the surface, where steam is produced and sent to the turbine.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “storage,” “generator,” and “electricity,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the process hard to understand. “The water boils” and “vapours condense” do not accurately describe the diagram’s stages, while “utility pole” is not the appropriate term for the transmission pylon shown. There are also noticeable spelling errors, such as “procduction,” “discribes,” and “electriciti.” Aim for precise, repeated process terms rather than adding unsupported descriptions, and check spelling carefully. More accurate verbs such as “pump,” “heat,” “rise,” and “drive” would help explain the sequence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to combine ideas using subordinate clauses, as in “When the wate reaches at the Earth geothermal zone,” and you use both present-tense statements and sequencing. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some relationships difficult to follow. Examples include “the process … discribes,” “The production is starting,” and “the electricity is giving,” where verb forms or voice are not controlled. In “where hot rocks settle down in the tunnel which rise the temperature,” the clause structure and subject–verb agreement are also unclear. Practise accurate present simple passive forms for processes, such as “cold water is pumped down” and “the water is heated,” and divide long sentences into clearer stages.
