IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing electricity from water.
Overall, the process consists of several stages, beginning with the cold water injecting into geothermal zone and ending with the transmitting the electricity to tower.
Initially,Cold water is pump down into the injection well which is 4.5 km below the surface of earth. The injejction well push the cold water into the geothermal zone, which are subsequently hot rocks which converts water into vapors . In the next stage, these vapors are sent to the production well from the hot vapors are collected in the condenser.
Following this, the steam of water used to power the turbine from the rotation of the turbine cause the formation of the electricity in the genrator which is attached to the turbine or collect the power from the turbine.Final step is to transmit electric energy to the tower which leads the electricity to required place.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as a sequence, include the 4.5 km depth, and mention the main equipment through to electricity transmission. However, some stages are inaccurately described: the water is heated as it passes through the hot-rock zone, then hot water rises through the production well; it is not vapour that is sent up that well. The condenser is also described as collecting hot vapours, rather than producing steam from the hot water. Your overview gives the start and end points but does not clearly summarise the key transformation from cold water to steam and then electricity. To strengthen the response, report each stage precisely and distinguish the roles of the production well, condenser, turbine and generator.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall sequence, supported by markers such as “Initially,” “In the next stage,” “Following this,” and “Final step.” This makes the general direction of the process understandable. However, the stages are crowded into one body paragraph, and some links between ideas are unclear—for example, “from the hot vapors are collected in the condenser” interrupts the sequence and makes the relationship between the production well and condenser difficult to follow. The final sentence also combines the turbine, generator and transmission into a confusing chain. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and process details, and connect each stage with clear references to what moves or operates next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which helps identify the equipment. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or awkward: “manufacturing electricity” is less natural than “generating electricity,” and “the turbine cause the formation of the electricity” does not describe the generator’s role precisely. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “injejction” and “genrator,” and imprecise phrases such as “transmit electric energy to the tower.” Aim for accurate process verbs and standard technical collocations, such as water being pumped, heated, converted into steam, and used to drive a turbine.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “the geothermal zone, which are subsequently hot rocks.” However, control is limited, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction frequently make parts difficult to interpret. Examples include “Cold water is pump down,” “the injection well push,” and “which are … hot rocks which converts water.” The long sentence beginning “Following this” also lacks a clear grammatical structure, while punctuation and spacing are inconsistent. Practise forming accurate passive descriptions of processes—for example, “Cold water is pumped down the injection well”—and keep each stage in a complete, clearly punctuated sentence before attempting longer structures.
