IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given diagram presents the various steps involved in the production of electrity by using eothermal energy.
overall, this process takes total 8 steps, start form Cold water and the end at electricty genaration by a turbine and generator.
Process starts from the Cold water reservoir where it is pumped down to the geothemal zone (hot rocks) through a drilled injection wall.moreover,In geothermal region this caold water begins to become hot ,due to very high temperature water converts into hot water.
In the production wall conected with the connected to the condensor ,water again pumped up in its hot form and reaches the condensor ,where highr presssurized steam collides with the blades of turbine and turbine starts to rotate which is further connected to the generatore to produce electricty. In adition the, electricity produced by genratore is supplied for comercial and domestic utilzation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main purpose and describe the broad route from cold water through underground hot rocks to electricity generation. However, the account is only partial: it says there are “8 steps,” but the diagram presents five numbered stages, and it does not clearly explain that water is heated as it passes through the geothermal zone before rising in the production well. The condenser’s role is also misrepresented: it is described as the place where pressurised steam collides with turbine blades, whereas steam then travels from the condenser to power the turbine. The claim that electricity is supplied for commercial and domestic use is not shown. The response is 140 words, below the required 150, and needs a more accurate, complete overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable sequence, moving from an introduction and overview to the underground process and then electricity generation. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and phrases such as “Process starts” and “In the production…” signal progression. However, the overview’s “8 steps” does not match the diagram and makes the organisation less reliable. Several links are awkward or repetitive, including “connected with the connected to,” while “moreover” does not clearly express the relationship between pumping and heating. The final sentence adds an unsupported use for the electricity rather than completing the process description. Use clear stage-by-stage sequencing and refer consistently to each component to make the progression easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection,” “geothermal zone,” “production,” “condensor,” and “turbine,” so the reader can generally recognise the subject. However, the range is limited and many spelling errors make the writing difficult to read, for example “electrity,” “eothermal,” “genaration,” and “utilzation.” Some word choices are inaccurate or imprecise: “wall” is used for “well,” and “collides with the blades” is not a natural description of steam powering a turbine. Repetition of “water,” “hot,” and “connected” also limits flexibility. Aim for accurate process terms and natural collocations, such as “is converted into steam” and “drives the turbine.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to combine ideas in longer sentences, for example by using “where” and “which,” but these complex structures are often faulty. In “overall, this process takes total 8 steps, start form Cold water,” punctuation and sentence boundaries are missing, and the phrasing lacks necessary grammatical words. The sentence beginning “In the production wall…” contains a repeated, incomplete construction (“connected with the connected to”), making the relationship between components unclear. There are also problems with articles, verb forms, and sentence control, as in “water converts into hot water” and “turbine starts to rotate which is further connected.” Use shorter, complete sentences first, then add subordinate clauses carefully; check capitalization, commas, and full stops.
