IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Over all the process consist of five main stages.First starting with pumping cold water, under ground and with the production of electricity.cold water is pumped under the ground through the depth 4.5kilometers.It means passing through the rocks beneath earth surface where it is heated by Geo themal energy.Next the hot water is pumped through condenser by steam .This steam is used to operate a turbine. The steam is used to generate the turbine which is connected to a generator. The generator uses turbine movement to produce electricity. Finally the elecricity is powerd through pipe lines for use in homes facories and bisness purpose.elecricity is used in homes for daily needs. In conclusions geo thermal energy is used to produce elecricity.Because electricity is our basic need that helps us to solve our routine works. Finally we say that electricity helps us to solve our daily problems.Because elecricity is our basic needs so we have to use it carefully.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main process and include several relevant stages: cold water is pumped underground to a depth of 4.5 kilometres, heated by hot rocks, and the resulting steam drives a turbine and generator. However, the sequence is not always accurately described. In particular, hot water is pumped up through the production well to the condenser; it is not pumped “through condenser by steam.” The overview also says there are five stages without clearly summarising the full transformation from cold water to electricity. The final comments about electricity being a basic need and helping with daily problems are not features of the diagram, while the transmission lines and the roles of the injection and production wells could be reported more clearly. Focus on describing the illustrated stages rather than adding general opinions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is an attempt to guide the reader through the process using sequence markers such as “Next” and “Finally,” and the response broadly follows the movement from underground water to electricity. However, the progression becomes difficult to follow because several stages are compressed into one long sequence, and the links between them are sometimes unclear. For example, “This steam is used to operate a turbine” is followed by “The steam is used to generate the turbine,” which repeats the idea without clarifying the next step. The concluding comments also interrupt the process description and repeat the point about electricity’s importance. Organise the response into a brief overview and a clearly ordered description, using one main stage per sentence and avoiding repeated conclusions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “pumping,” “rocks,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which helps communicate the general subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the process unclear. “Pumped through condenser by steam” does not accurately express how hot water reaches the condenser, and “generate the turbine” is not a natural description of the turbine’s role. There are also frequent spelling errors, including “elecricity,” “Geo themal,” “powerd,” and “bisness,” which reduce clarity and control. Use precise terms from the diagram, such as “injection well,” “production well,” and “transmission lines,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to describe a sequence and includes some longer sentence forms, but sentence structures are often incomplete or inaccurately joined. For example, “Over all the process consist of five main stages” lacks correct subject–verb agreement, while “First starting with pumping cold water, under ground and with the production of electricity” is not a complete, well-formed sentence. Several clauses are joined with full stops or commas in ways that make the relationships unclear, and punctuation spacing is inconsistent. The repeated use of simple statements also limits grammatical variety. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use accurate passive forms for the process, such as “Cold water is pumped down the injection well” and “Hot water is brought to the surface.”
