IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

when the cold water is obsorbed in to the earth it pases through the rocks and different other under ground metirial it become hot then the production is started .then the water gone to the upward.in the direction of condencer then this hot water is more boil at high boiling point .arter much more boiling this water this hot water change into steam .when more steam is produced in the condenser .It passes throught the smal pipe. And went into the turbine of the geothermal of the power plant .This turbine is powered by the steam.this steam is used to wok the turbine the fan of the turbine is rotated.and produce energy then it is transfer to the generator .this generator is powered by the stean and energy of the turbine .this generator is worked with the powered by the turbine .the generator is converted this energy into electricity and the generator supplied this electricity to the electrical tower .so this electricity is used to run our home appliences and industries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the main sequence from water being sent underground to electricity being generated, and you mention the production well, condenser, steam, turbine and generator. However, the process is only partially and sometimes inaccurately reported. The water is not “absorbed” into the earth: it is pumped down an injection well, heated as it passes through hot rocks, and pumped back up the production well. The condenser is described as making the water boil, whereas the diagram shows it releasing steam. You also misstate that the generator is powered by steam; it is driven by the turbine. There is no clear overview of the process as a whole. A more accurate summary of the stages and their relationships would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response follows a broadly chronological order, moving from underground water to the condenser, turbine and generator, so the reader can recognise the intended process. However, progression is weakened by repeated explanations, such as the turbine being powered by steam and the generator being powered by the turbine, and by abrupt links including “then” and “so.” The text is presented as one continuous paragraph, with limited signposting between stages. Some references are also unclear: “this water” and “this energy” recur without always making the exact process or source clear. Organise the account into a brief overview and a logically sequenced description, using precise links such as “after heating” and “subsequently” only where they clarify the sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “production well,” “condenser,” “turbine,” “generator” and “electricity,” which helps convey the topic. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, particularly “this water,” “steam” and “powered by.” Spelling errors such as “obsorbed,” “condencer,” “throught” and “stean” make the description harder to read, while expressions such as “the fan of the turbine” and “electrical tower” are imprecise for the diagram. Aim for accurate process terms and natural collocations, for example, describing water as being pumped down a well and heated by hot rocks, then steam driving a turbine. Proofreading technical vocabulary would also improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to describe a sequence using time links and some longer sentences, but sentence structures are limited and errors are frequent enough to make parts difficult to follow. For example, “when the cold water is … it pases through the rocks … it become hot” combines clauses without reliable punctuation and has inconsistent verb forms. “This generator is converted this energy” also lacks a clear grammatical relationship between the subject and action. Articles, agreement and tense are often uncontrolled, as in “the water gone” and “the generator is worked.” Use clear present-simple sentences for a process, checking subject–verb agreement and sentence boundaries. Then add a few accurately formed clauses to show how each stage leads to the next.
