IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The following chart give the information about production of electricity in Geo thermal power plant.
The cold water is sent to the earth which is very hot due to earth pressure and warm rocks .For this purpose the dwelling is done in the earth for about 4.5 kilometers and the cold is pumped down into the ground. The well is called Injection well. The inside of earth is very hot due to very high pressure. As as result cold water become very hot. After the heating of the injected cold water the water is pumped up with the help of another well called Production well. Now the water is condenced and the steam formed is used to run the turbine. The turbine is connected to the generater and when the generator moves eiectricty is produced. after that the transmission of electricity take place to the varios power stations by mean of towers and wires.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You describe the main sequence: cold water is sent underground, heated by hot rocks, brought back up, and used to produce electricity. You also include the 4.5-kilometre depth and identify the injection and production wells, which are relevant details. However, the response does not give a clear overview of the process as a whole, and some stages are incomplete or imprecise. For example, the diagram shows water becoming steam in a condenser before the steam powers the turbine; your wording, “the water is condenced and the steam formed,” does not clearly explain this conversion. The claim that heating occurs because of “earth pressure” is not shown. A more complete account of the stages and a concise overview would make the summary more fully address the task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The ideas are presented in a broadly chronological order, and linking phrases such as “As a result,” “After,” and “Now” help the reader follow the process. The response therefore has a recognisable sequence from pumping water down to generating electricity. However, it is written as one continuous paragraph, and some links are repetitive or awkward, such as “After the heating … Now the water…” The opening sentence does not establish a clear overview, while the final sentence adds a transmission detail without a smooth transition from electricity generation. Organise the stages into a clearer progression, use paragraphing where appropriate, and rely on precise links that show cause and sequence rather than repeating basic time markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use several relevant process terms, including “Injection well,” “Production well,” “turbine,” “generator,” and “transmission,” so the reader can identify the main components. However, the vocabulary range is limited and some word choices or spellings make the description less clear, including “dwelling” for drilling, “condenced,” “generater,” and “eiectricty.” Phrases such as “the inside of earth is very hot” and “the water is pumped up” are understandable but could be more precise and varied. Use standard technical terms and check spelling carefully; for example, describe water as being “heated by hot rocks” and then “converted into steam.” This would improve precision without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response communicates the basic process using simple statements and some attempts at longer cause-and-effect structures, such as “As a result cold water become very hot.” However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts less fluent. Examples include subject–verb agreement in “chart give” and “water become,” missing or incorrect articles in “the earth” and “the turbine,” and tense or agreement problems in “the transmission of electricity take place.” Punctuation and spacing are also inconsistent, with missing spaces after full stops and an unnecessary full stop before “For this purpose.” Practise accurate simple sentences first, then combine stages with controlled clauses such as “Once heated, the water is pumped to the surface.”
