IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The chart illustrates electrical production through geothermal energy in five steps at geothermal power plant.
Overall, the process involves sequence of five steps. The proces occurs in two stages in one it is underground and in other stage it occurs above the land.It starts and ends above the ground.Three steps occur on land while remaining 2 underground.Water seems to be most important asset in this process.
There is a sequence of several steps. It starts when cold water which is pumped down through 4.5 km long pump.Following that cold water enters in the injection well then it passes from geothermal zone where hot rocks are present. While passing through hot rocks,it becomes warm. The warm water then enters the production well from where it is pumped out in to the condensor. There water is transformed in to steam following that steams enters in to turbine and starts it.Generator when powered by turbine it generates electricity and finally electricity is tranfered to transformer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers the main sequence from cold-water injection through heating, steam production and electricity generation, and the overview identifies the underground and above-ground parts of the process. The reference to the 4.5 km depth is accurate. This is a strong account of the key stages, with some features described clearly, but a few details are incomplete or inaccurate: the water is pumped down through the injection well, rather than through a “pump,” and the final output is sent to a transmission pylon, not a transformer. The overview also says there are five steps without clarifying that the generator follows the turbine. More precise reporting of the equipment and final stage would make the summary more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a chronological description. Phrases such as “Following that” and “The warm water then” help the reader follow the process. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, with several stages linked by repeated “then” and “following that.” The overview also repeats the idea of a sequence already stated in the introduction, while the long final paragraph combines many stages without clear sentence boundaries. Some references are unclear, particularly “There” in “There water is transformed,” and the opening overview’s “in one” and “in other stage.” Use clearer paragraphing and varied, accurate links, and make each stage’s relationship explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is adequate process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “production well,” “steam,” and “turbine,” which allows the main stages to be understood. The response also attempts more specific terms such as “electrical production.” However, several choices are inaccurate or awkward: “4.5 km long pump” confuses the well with a pump, “transformer” misidentifies the final equipment, and “starts it” is an imprecise way to describe the turbine’s operation. Spelling errors such as “condensor” and “tranfered” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise technical nouns and natural collocations, and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “the production well from where it is pumped out” and a time clause beginning “when.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and sentence boundaries and punctuation are inconsistent. For example, “Overall, the process involves sequence of five steps” is missing an article, while “Generator when powered by turbine it generates electricity” has an awkward clause structure and missing articles. There are also errors in prepositions and forms, as in “pumped out in to the condensor.” These issues sometimes make relationships between stages harder to follow. Practise accurate clause construction, articles, and punctuation, then proofread each sentence.
