IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Thw geothermal energy is produced the water are start flow from a top surface around about 4.5 km it pumped down to start injected the well. The geothermal zone have hot rock to the production well it produced heat as a steam of condenser here ity start the air flow in the condensor the turbine start rotation by using main steam, It generate power electricity powered by turbine to produced electricity.

The generator are start this process in the circle that cold water came inside to inject in the well become hot going up to produce steam and make air due to its vapourization make make turbine rotate and generate power to distribute it in the pole having 11000v line that going to the transfermer make it reduced and then supply start for cities and and other areas like factories and other requirement to fulfill that and help people by providing electricity

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the main process elements: cold water is sent underground, heated by hot rocks, brought back up, and used to drive a turbine and generator. The reference to 4.5 km is also accurate. However, the stages are not reported clearly or completely: the condenser’s role is confused with producing steam, and the overview does not clearly explain the full sequence from water input to electricity generation. You also add unsupported details about an 11,000-volt line, a transformer reducing voltage, and supply to cities and factories; these are not shown in the diagram. Focus on the illustrated stages and give a concise, accurate overview before describing them in order.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is an attempt to follow the process from water being pumped down to electricity generation, so the reader can recognise a basic sequence. However, the response is presented as two long blocks with little clear separation of stages, and several ideas run together, especially in the opening sentence and the section beginning “The generator are start this process.” Connections such as “here” and “and then” do not reliably show how one stage leads to the next. The repeated reference to the generator also disrupts progression. Organise the response into an overview and a step-by-step description, using clear sequencing phrases such as “first,” “after passing through the hot rocks,” and “finally.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “production well,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which helps identify the equipment. The range is nevertheless limited and several word choices or combinations make the process difficult to understand, such as “start the air flow,” “main steam,” and “make air due to its vapourization.” There are also spelling and word-form problems, including “condensor” and “transfermer.” Use precise terms for what the diagram shows: water is heated, steam drives the turbine, and the generator produces electricity. Avoid adding technical terms such as “11000v line” when they are not supported by the visual.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to connect several stages in longer sentences, but sentence structures are often faulty and errors frequently obscure relationships between actions. For example, “The geothermal zone have hot rock to the production well it produced heat” combines clauses without clear grammatical links, while “The generator are start this process” has problems with verb form and agreement. Articles and tense are also inconsistent, as in “a top surface” and “cold water came inside.” Punctuation is insufficient, creating run-on sentences. Practise writing one clear sentence for each stage, using accurate passive forms such as “Cold water is pumped down” and “Hot water is brought to the surface,” and check subject–verb agreement.
