IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrates that how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity by undergoing through difffrent processes that how water is pumped up an down and then after producing electricity howb it is transfered to different places.
Initially it is shown that the cold water travels down the earth 4.5km through pipes to the injection well then it passses through geothermal zone hot rocks that are present underground after that water is transferred to production well from where the hot water is pumped up through the pipes that are stored under the earth crust it then passes to a condenser where water is condensed inti steam .Afterwards water passes through the turbine where water is moved and passes through diffrent stages where the motion of water oroduces electricity. The electricity is produced after passing through different stages and steps. If we see the comparison between electricity produced through solar energy is better than electricity produced through geothermal plant as electricity produced through solar is natural source which has less side effects than electricity produced through geothermal power plant.
As a result the electricity produced is then transferred through electricity towers to different places where required.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the main sequence from cold water being sent underground to electricity generation, and you include the 4.5 km depth and the geothermal zone. However, the process is only partially reported: the turbine is described as moving water, rather than being driven by steam, and the generator’s role is not clearly explained. The final comparison with solar energy is not shown in the diagram and is irrelevant to this process task; it takes space from accurate description of the stages. The overview is also unclear, and some details are inaccurate, such as saying the water is stored under the earth’s crust. Focus on the diagram’s stages and give a concise overview of how underground heat turns water into steam that drives the turbine and generator.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a recognisable chronological order, signalled by “Initially,” “after that,” and “Afterwards,” so the reader can follow the broad movement of water through the plant. However, the response is presented as one long paragraph, and the progression becomes difficult to track when several stages are joined in lengthy sentences. The repeated references to “different processes” and “different stages” do not clarify how the components connect. The solar-energy comparison also interrupts the process sequence before the final sentence returns to electricity transmission. Separate the overview from the stage-by-stage account, use shorter sentences, and connect each component explicitly to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “production well,” “condenser,” and “turbine,” which helps identify the equipment. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or repetitive: “water is moved” does not explain the turbine’s function, while “different stages” and “different places” are vague. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “difffrent,” “passses,” “inti,” and “transfered,” which reduce clarity and control. Use precise process verbs such as “flows,” “is heated,” “rises,” “is converted into steam,” and “drives,” and check spelling carefully. Avoid introducing unrelated vocabulary about solar energy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts to link stages with subordinate clauses and sequencing expressions, but complex sentences are often faulty or difficult to follow. For example, “The diagram illustrates that how…” combines incompatible structures, and “after producing electricity howb it is transfered” lacks a clear grammatical connection. There are recurring problems with verb forms and agreement, as in “then it passses,” as well as missing or incorrect articles and punctuation around the long sequence beginning “Initially it is shown…”. These errors sometimes make relationships between stages unclear. Build control with shorter sentences using a consistent present simple or passive form, such as “Cold water is pumped down the injection well. It is heated by the hot rocks and pumped back to the surface.”
