IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrate the process of generate electricity through geothermal energy.
overall the production of the energy with geothermal power plant have five stages starting with the water flow into the injection well and the last stage is turbine and generator work together for the produce electricity through steam.
Addition with the cold water pumped down into injection well then the water pass through the geothermal zone which is covered with hot rocks. furthermore the water injected into the production well where the steam water pump in the upward direction, helps the water put into condenser.
Moreover the condenser convert the water in form of steam. the steam pass through the condenser next the rotary machine turbine and the other name generator machine work together to generate electricity through which is powered by steam. The energy transferred into the power tower which helps to provide energy for the further steps.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as geothermal electricity production and include several central stages: cold water is sent down the injection well, passes through hot rocks, rises through the production well, and is converted to steam before driving machinery. However, the overview is not fully accurate: it says the final stage is the turbine and generator working together, while the diagram presents electricity generation as the outcome after steam powers the turbine and the turbine drives the generator. Some details are unclear or misreported, particularly “steam water” being pumped up; it is hot water that rises before steam is produced in the condenser. The account also omits the 4.5 km depth and does not clearly explain the turbine-generator relationship. A more precise overview and clearer stage descriptions would make the main features more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic sequence, moving from water entering the injection well to the geothermal zone, production well, condenser, and electricity generation. Paragraph breaks also separate the overview from some process details. However, progression is weakened by unclear links and repeated or inaccurate transitions. For example, “the steam pass through the condenser next the rotary machine turbine” makes the order difficult to follow, since steam is produced in the condenser and then travels to the turbine. Connectors such as “Addition,” “furthermore,” and “Moreover” are used mechanically rather than to show precise relationships. Organise the description into a clear overview followed by stages in order, and use simple references such as “this heated water” and “the resulting steam” to make each link explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which helps identify the main components. However, the range and control of wording are limited, and several choices are inaccurate or awkward enough to obscure meaning. “Steam water” is not an appropriate label for the hot water rising from underground, while “rotary machine turbine” and “power tower” do not describe the equipment naturally; the latter should be a transmission pylon. Phrases such as “for the produce electricity” also show difficulty selecting the correct form and collocation. Aim for precise process verbs and standard technical terms, for example “is heated,” “rises,” “is converted into steam,” and “drives the generator.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and linked sentences, but the range is limited and errors occur frequently, sometimes making relationships between stages hard to understand. The opening has subject–verb and verb-form errors: “The diagram illustrate the process of generate” should be “The diagram illustrates the process of generating.” Agreement and article use are also problematic in “the production … have five stages,” and several clauses lack clear grammatical structure, as in “the other name generator machine work together.” Sentence boundaries and capitalisation are inconsistent, including the lowercase “overall” after the opening sentence and the fragment-like construction “through which is powered by steam.” Practise accurate present-simple descriptions and build longer sentences around clear subjects and verbs, such as “Steam powers the turbine, which drives the generator.”
