IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram illustrates the way electricity is generated using geothermal energy.

Overall, there is five main stages in the production of electricity process, beginning with stroingg cold water and pumped down and ending with using a generator powered by turbine and electricity process. along the way, the cold water is conjucted, producted well and pupmed up when it gets hot.

Initially, a cold water is stored underground and pumped down to about 4.5 km. In the following stage, they injuct well the cold water to a geothermal zone which contains a hot rocks to turn the water hot, so it producted well and pumped up once this process is completed, the hot water condensered and make steam.

finnaly, the steam made from the hot water they pumped it into a turbine then to a generator powered by turbine and generated electricity so they can powered the electricity columns.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the process as electricity generation from geothermal energy and include several key stages, including water being sent underground, heated by hot rocks, brought back up, and used to produce steam that drives a turbine and generator. However, the overview is unclear and contains an inaccurate description: cold water is stored at ground level, not underground, and the process does not begin with “stroingg” water. Some stage details are also difficult to follow, particularly how the wells connect to the geothermal zone and how steam is produced. The response is just below the required minimum length, which limits the opportunity to report the stages clearly. Add a concise, accurate overview and describe the sequence in distinct steps, including the condenser and the 4.5 km depth.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable sequence, using “Overall,” “Initially,” “In the following stage,” and “finally” to guide the reader through the process. The opening and overview are separated from the main description, which gives the answer some organisation. However, progression is not consistently clear because several stages are compressed into long sentences. For example, the sentence beginning “In the following stage” moves from the injection well to hot rocks, the production well, and the condenser without clear boundaries. Some references, such as “they” and “this process,” are also unclear. Use one paragraph for the overview and another for the stages, with shorter sentences and precise links such as “Next” and “After this.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “turbine,” “generator,” and “steam,” so the reader can recognise the subject. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, spelling, and word-form errors make parts difficult to understand: “stroingg,” “conjucted,” “producted well,” “injuct,” and “pupmed.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “electricity columns” and “powered the electricity.” Aim for accurate technical terms and natural collocations rather than repeating “powered” and “process.” For instance, describe water as being “pumped down” and “heated,” then say steam “drives the turbine” and the generator “produces electricity.” Proofreading spelling would also improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the response includes a basic sequence of actions. However, the longer structures are often faulty, and frequent errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction sometimes make the meaning hard to follow. Examples include “there is five main stages,” “a cold water is stored,” and “the steam … they pumped it into a turbine.” The final sentence also joins several actions without a clear grammatical structure. Practise forming accurate passive sentences for process descriptions, such as “Cold water is pumped down the injection well” and “The hot water is converted into steam.” Check subject–verb agreement and use articles consistently before countable nouns.
