IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The workflow diagram explains the process of how geothermal energy provide current.
In short, cold water goes through hot rocks. The coverted hot water then pumped upwards and after putting them into a condensor the water become condensed and transfer into gas. Finally the steam creates cyclical motion in turbine which results electricity as the turbine is connected with a generator.
Using water as a source of energy is a great invention of modern science. The main.feature of this process is when the water goes through geothermal zone it automatically becomes hot and after that the condensation part have a big role in this process. It converts the water into gas that have a high velocity. This velocity of water comes from the pump we use to take the water upward. The velocity of this converted gas helps the turbine start. Running of the turbine is the most important feature here. Cause the running turbine then helps to produce electricity from generator.
In conclusion, the whole process is interdependent. Every element is important to run the whole process correctly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main sequence broadly: cold water passes through hot rocks, returns to the surface, and steam drives a turbine connected to a generator. However, the account only partially covers the diagram and some explanations are inaccurate or unclear. For example, the condenser is described as making water “condensed” before turning it into gas, whereas the diagram shows hot water entering the condenser and steam then moving to the turbine. The overview also focuses on the process being “interdependent” rather than clearly summarising the key stages from underground heating to electricity generation. Include the injection and production wells explicitly, mention the 4.5 km depth, and describe each stage in the correct order to make the report more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an opening summary, a further explanatory paragraph, and a conclusion. Sequencing expressions such as “In short,” “after that,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the general process. However, progression is weakened by repetition: the role of the turbine and generator is explained more than once, and the final statement that every element is important adds little new information. Some links are also unclear, particularly “This velocity of water comes from the pump we use,” which does not connect logically to the diagram’s stages. Organise the body around the water’s journey underground and the subsequent steam-powered machinery, using clear references and avoiding repeated explanations.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “condensation,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which helps communicate the topic. There is also an attempt to use more formal language, such as “interdependent.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, sometimes making the process difficult to understand: “provide current,” “coverted hot water,” “condensor,” and “creates cyclical motion” are not suitable descriptions here. “Gas” is less precise than “steam” in this context, and “velocity” is not supported by the diagram. Use standard technical terms consistently, such as “generate electricity,” “heated water,” “production well,” and “steam drives the turbine.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple and longer sentences, including a sequence joined with “and after,” and the general meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors occur frequently in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. Examples include “geothermal energy provide,” “the water become condensed,” and “the condensation part have”; these should use singular agreement and more accurate verb patterns. The sentence beginning “The coverted hot water then pumped upwards” is missing an auxiliary verb, while “Cause the running turbine then helps” is an incomplete and awkwardly formed sentence. Punctuation is also inconsistent, as shown by “main.feature.” Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and complete sentence structures before adding complex clauses.
