IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram describe how geothermal energy used to produced electricity

In diagram geothermal power plant have saveral stages ho we getting source of energy using thermal plant.

first of all thediagram show cold water sources and 4.5 km deep cold water pumped down, basically water pump are push the water injection well, then we go ahead a next stage geothermal zone we can also called hot rocks.

After completing that process production is completely running, here is cold water convert into hot water and pump sucktion to up side to condenser and condenser evoprate the whole supply of water into steam and turbine move fastly and the last final stage turbine produces a electicity and now generator transfer electricity to peoples

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the general subject and several key stages, including water being pumped down, heated by hot rocks, returned to the surface, and converted to steam. However, the account is incomplete and some details are inaccurate: the turbine is powered by steam, while the generator—not the turbine—produces electricity. The final statement that the generator transfers electricity “to peoples” is not shown; the diagram indicates transmission through power lines. There is no clear overview of the process as a whole, and the stages are only briefly described. The response also falls 29 words short of the required 150, limiting the detail you can provide. Include a concise overview and accurately explain each stage and the turbine-generator relationship.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic sequence, signalled by “first of all,” “then,” and “the last final stage,” so the reader can follow parts of the process. However, the response is presented as one paragraph and does not establish a clear overall progression from an introduction and overview to the detailed stages. Some links are unclear or mechanical: “After completing that process production is completely running” does not clearly connect the heating stage to the next step. Several ideas are crowded into long sentences, making the sequence harder to follow. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and process details, and connect each stage explicitly—for example, explain that heated water rises through the production well before steam drives the turbine.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “hot rocks,” “condenser,” “steam,” and “turbine.” This shows a basic ability to describe the diagram, but the range is limited and several word choices or forms make the meaning unclear. For example, “water pump are push” and “pump sucktion” do not express the process naturally, while “evoprate” and “electicity” are misspelled. “Turbine move fastly” is also imprecise for describing how steam powers the turbine. Aim for accurate process collocations and check spelling; terms such as “pump water down,” “convert water into steam,” and “drive the turbine” would make the description clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to describe a sequence using simple clauses and some longer sentences, but grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes obscure the relationships between stages. The opening, “The diagram describe how geothermal energy used to produced electricity,” has problems with subject–verb agreement and verb forms. Other examples include “water pump are push the water” and “cold water convert into hot water,” where the verb forms and sentence structure are faulty. Articles and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent, as in “In diagram geothermal power plant have saveral stages.” Use a reliable present-simple pattern, such as “Cold water is pumped down the injection well,” and build each stage in a separate, complete sentence. This will improve accuracy and clarity.
