IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The pictures illustrate the process of Geothetmal power plant that make from cold water to electrocity.

It started with a cold water and pumped down to the Geothermal zone. Then it started to pumped up because hot water have a more pressure than cold. After it transformed to the gas and steam to the turbine of generator. After all this process,it generate electricity.

Firstly, the cold water passes underground process like pumped down, pumped up and geothermal zone to transform to the gas.Cold water pumped up to the probably 4,5 km to got to geothermal zone after this it start to pumped up.

Secondary, the process that incoming to the electoricity. After it turned to the gas it start to steam to the turbine of generator. Then it make many spinning and that spinning it generate the electricity. And that is how this line process end.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the general process, from cold water being pumped underground to electricity being generated, and mention the geothermal zone, steam and turbine. However, the account is incomplete and includes an unsupported explanation: the claim that hot water rises because it has “more pressure than cold” is not shown in the diagram. The depth is also misreported: 4.5 km describes the injection well’s depth, not how far water is pumped “to got to geothermal zone.” The condenser and the distinct roles of the turbine and generator are not clearly explained. The response is also 13 words below the required minimum. To improve, give a concise overview and describe each stage accurately, including water heating in the hot rocks and steam driving the turbine.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the description: you begin with a general account, then use “Firstly” and “Secondary” to introduce further details. The reader can follow the broad movement from water to electricity. However, the stages are repeated rather than developed in a clear sequence: the opening and the first body paragraph both describe water being pumped down and up, while the final paragraph returns to the turbine and electricity. Some links are awkward or unclear, such as “After it transformed to the gas and steam to the turbine of generator.” Paragraphing does not yet create a strong overall progression. Arrange the stages once, in order, and use clear links such as “Next,” “Once heated,” and “Finally.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “cold water,” “Geothermal zone,” “steam,” “turbine,” and “electricity,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms make the description difficult to understand. “Geothetmal” and “electoricity” are misspelled, “gas” is imprecise for the steam shown, and “many spinning” does not naturally describe the turbine’s movement. Phrases such as “the process that incoming to the electoricity” also do not convey the intended meaning clearly. Build a small set of accurate process verbs and collocations, such as “is pumped,” “is heated,” “is converted into steam,” and “drives the turbine,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to describe a sequence using simple clauses and some linking structures, but grammatical control is weak and errors frequently affect clarity. For example, “It started with a cold water and pumped down” lacks a clear subject for the second verb and uses an unnecessary article; “it started to pumped up” has an incorrect verb form; and “hot water have” has faulty subject–verb agreement. The sentence beginning “Cold water pumped up to the probably 4,5 km” is difficult to interpret because its structure and prepositions are unclear. Most sentences rely on basic patterns, with little accurate variety. Practise passive forms suited to process diagrams (“water is pumped down”) and check articles, agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries.
