IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the production of electricity throug the geothermal energy.

Overall, it is clear that diagram consists on five stages. This process starts from cold water. After passing through different stages, it ends at generator turbine.

Firstly, the cold water pumped down into the injection well. Secondly, the injection well is located 4.5 km in depth. The injection well is located on one side while the production well is located on another side with the same depth. The area that seperate two walls is called geothermal zone that have hot rocks inside it. Although the cold water passes through the same area, it turns into hot water. At third stage, the hot water pumped up from the production well.

At the fourth stage, the hot water reach into the condensor that convert water into steam. At the fifth stage, turbine powered by steam that circulate steam. Finaly, generator is used that is powered by turbine and produce electricity. At the end, electricity produced in electric tower.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main sequence from cold water entering the injection well to electricity being generated, and you include the important depth of 4.5 km. The description of water heating as it passes through the geothermal zone is also relevant. However, the overview is unclear: “it ends at generator turbine” incorrectly combines two separate components, and the process actually ends with electricity being transmitted from the generator. Some details are also inaccurate or insufficiently explained. For example, the wells are not stated to have the “same depth”; 4.5 km is the depth shown for the injection well. The condenser produces steam, while the turbine is powered by that steam. A clearer overview and more precise descriptions of these stages would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by a chronological account, with “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “At the fourth stage” helping readers follow the process. This logical progression is a strength. However, the sequence markers sometimes make the writing feel mechanical, and the overview’s “generator turbine” makes the endpoint difficult to understand. Some links between ideas are also awkward: “Although the cold water passes through the same area, it turns into hot water” does not clearly express the relationship between the geothermal zone and the change in temperature. Grouping the underground stages together and then the surface machinery together, with clearer references to each component, would improve flow and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” and “turbine.” These terms help communicate the stages, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise, such as “electric tower” for the transmission pylon and “turbine that circulate steam,” which does not accurately describe the turbine’s role. There are also spelling errors, including “throug,” “seperate,” and “Finaly,” and repeated use of “located” and “stage” limits variety. Aim for precise process verbs such as “converts,” “drives,” and “transmits,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the clause beginning “Although the cold water passes through the same area,” and the stages are usually understandable. However, errors occur in several sentence patterns and sometimes make relationships unclear. For example, “the cold water pumped down” and “the hot water pumped up” need passive verb forms (“is pumped”), while “the hot water reach” needs subject–verb agreement (“reaches”). In “the condensor that convert water into steam,” the relative-clause verb should agree with its singular subject. Articles and sentence construction also need attention in “At third stage” and “generator is used that is powered by turbine.” Practise accurate passive forms and check each sentence for a complete verb and agreement.
