IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram is about the electricity producing with the help of the geothermal energy. There 4.5 km diffrence between the cold water and the injection wall. Additionlay, the Geothermal zone is under the surface and between the production wall or condensor. In Geotheemal zone the cold water converts into hot rocks then hot water pumpd up. There is a generator and turbine that connected with each other. Morover, when the hot rocks reach to the condensor it stem the hot rocks. Futhermore, the turbine starting rotate in clockwise direction due to the steam.
When the turbine rotate the genrator start produce the electricity. So, the electricity supply to the tower with the help of the wire that connected with the tower. In contrast, its all about hwo the electricity is produced with the Geothermal power and how the every thing is connected with each other.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the general subject and mention several relevant stages, including water being pumped down, heated underground, brought back up, and used to drive a turbine and generator. However, the account only partially describes the process and includes important inaccuracies: the water does not turn into “hot rocks”; it is heated by the hot rocks. The condenser is also described as steaming the hot rocks, rather than converting the hot water into steam. The overview is unclear, and key details such as the 4.5 km depth and the sequence from steam to turbine to generator are not accurately explained. The response is also five words below the required minimum. To improve, give a clear overview and describe each stage precisely in order, using the diagram as your factual guide.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response follows a broadly chronological order, moving from the underground heating process to electricity generation, and linking words such as “Moreover” and “Furthermore” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, it is presented as one paragraph, so the stages are not clearly grouped, and some transitions do not express the relationship accurately. For example, “In contrast” introduces a concluding statement even though no contrast is being made. The repeated use of additive linkers also makes the progression feel mechanical, while unclear references such as “it” and “the tower” leave the reader to infer what is meant. Organise the description into a brief overview and a sequence of stages, and use linking expressions only when they clarify the process.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “injection,” “production,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which helps identify the main components. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the process difficult to understand. “The electricity producing” is awkward, “it stem the hot rocks” does not convey the condenser’s function, and “the turbine starting rotate” is not a natural description. There are also frequent spelling errors, including “diffrence,” “Geotheemal,” “condensor,” and “genrator.” Aim for precise verbs such as “heat,” “pump,” “convert,” and “drive,” and check spelling carefully. This would make your vocabulary more accurate and easier to follow.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to connect ideas in longer sentences, for example, “when the hot rocks reach to the condensor it stem the hot rocks,” and you use some simple sentence patterns to describe the stages. However, the range is limited, and errors in verb forms, sentence construction, and articles occur frequently. Examples include “There 4.5 km diffrence,” “the turbine starting rotate,” and “the genrator start produce the electricity.” These forms make parts of the process hard to interpret. Practise building accurate present-simple sentences for process descriptions, such as “Cold water is pumped down the injection well” and “Steam drives the turbine.” Also check subject–verb agreement and use complete clauses with clear subjects and verbs.
