IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
This daigram illustrate how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
In overview, this process have 5 stages such as, cold water, the injection well, the production well, condenser and then turbin spin anti-clockwise to produce electricity with the help of generator. This whole process is know as geothermal power plant.
First of all, it started from cold water which connected with pumped down which is 4.5 kilometer long. Secondly, cold water travel through the injection well in geothermal zone to heat water. Thirdly, after heating the water it tranfer to production well through pumped which help hot water to rise up. Fourtly, there is big condenser installed which is connected with generator turbin and pump which is used to throw steam to turbin. Lastly, turbin rotate in anti-clockwise with the power of steam and then generator which is attached with powered turbin produce electricity. This electricity which is produce is then transfer to tower.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as geothermal electricity production and include its main stages, from cold water entering the injection well to electricity being generated and transmitted. The overview also recognises the sequence, but it is not fully accurate: the diagram does not show the turbine spinning anti-clockwise, and the condenser releases steam rather than being used to “throw” it. The description of the wells and the heating stage is relevant, though some details are unclear or imprecise. The response is 147 words, so it falls three words short of the required minimum; this limits how fully the stages can be explained. For a stronger response, give a precise overview and describe the condenser, turbine and generator functions accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and a body paragraph that follows the process in sequence. Connectors such as “First of all,” “Secondly,” and “Lastly” help the reader follow the stages. However, the sequence markers are somewhat mechanical, and several sentences combine steps or relationships in ways that are difficult to follow, particularly the sentence about the condenser, generator, turbine and pump. The overview also repeats the stage sequence rather than highlighting the process’s main transformation. Use clearer sentence boundaries and refer to each component consistently, so the links between water, steam, turbine and generator are unmistakable.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” and “steam,” which helps communicate the subject. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “turbin spin” and “throw steam” do not describe the diagram naturally, while “pumped” is used where a noun such as “pump” or a verb such as “is pumped” is needed. Spelling errors such as “daigram,” “tranfer,” and “Fourtly” are noticeable, and “big” is too informal and vague for describing the condenser. Aim for accurate process verbs and standard technical spelling; this will make the account clearer and more appropriate for an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the sequence is generally understandable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction occur often enough to make some relationships unclear. For example, “This process have 5 stages” needs subject–verb agreement, and “This whole process is know” has an incorrect participle. In “cold water travel through the injection well,” the verb form is also incorrect. Some clauses are awkwardly joined, as in “This electricity which is produce is then transfer to tower,” where the relative clause and passive forms are not controlled. Practise accurate present-simple descriptions and passive constructions, such as “water is pumped” and “electricity is transmitted,” while keeping each stage in a clear sentence.
