IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The give diagram illustrates the step by step process of manufacturing of electricity with the help of geothermal energy.
Overall,it is clear that this process contain only five stages.Beginning with cold water pumped down in injection well, pass throuhg hot rocks then hot water in pumped up and pass through the condenser. At the end steam pass through turbine that span and generator make electricity.
In the first stage yhe cold water is pumped down to the injection well. Secondly, the cold water pass through the geothermal zone ( hot rocks ) that can increase the temperatur of water.Thirdly, the production well pumped up the hot water to the condenser.
When the hot water enter into condenser, the hot water converted into steam. In the final step the steam is enter into turbine and turbine spans round and the genrator manufacture electricity whi is powered by turbine and generator transfer the electricity into tower.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main sequence from pumping cold water underground to generating electricity, and your overview identifies the process as having five stages. The references to the injection well, hot rocks, production well, condenser, steam, turbine and generator are relevant and broadly match the diagram. However, some details are unclear or incomplete: the water is heated as it passes through the geothermal zone, but the 4.5 km depth is omitted, and the final description does not clearly explain that the turbine drives the generator. The statement that electricity is transferred “into tower” is imprecise; the diagram shows transmission lines leading to a pylon. Develop these key relationships more explicitly for a fuller account of the process.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the stages in sequence. Sequencing expressions such as “In the first stage,” “Secondly,” “Thirdly,” and “In the final step” help the reader follow the process, and the progression from underground water movement to electricity production is generally logical. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, the sequence markers are somewhat mechanical, and the overview repeats much of the same information as the body. Some links between steps are also abrupt, particularly the move from the condenser to the turbine and generator. Use more varied referencing and connect the stages through cause and effect.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “steam,” “turbine,” and “generator,” so the reader can identify the main components. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning less clear. For example, “manufacturing of electricity” is less natural than “generating electricity,” while “turbine spans round” and “generator manufacture electricity” do not express the process idiomatically. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “throuhg,” “temperatur,” and “genrator.” Build a bank of accurate process verbs and check spelling carefully; precise vocabulary will make the description clearer without requiring more technical detail.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple sentences and longer structures, including the overview’s sequence of stages and the sentence beginning “When the hot water enter into condenser.” This shows an effort to describe a process in connected clauses. However, control is inconsistent: verb forms and agreement are often inaccurate, as in “this process contain,” “the production well pumped up,” and “the steam is enter.” Articles and sentence construction also need attention, for example “into condenser” and the run-on sequence “the steam is enter into turbine and turbine spans round and the genrator manufacture electricity.” These errors can make relationships between actions difficult to follow. Practise present-simple passive forms such as “water is pumped” and “steam is produced,” and separate stages into complete, accurately punctuated sentences.
