IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
First of all, there is a big tank which contains cold water. That cold water is forced down deep into the Earth with the help of a pump which is about four and a half kilometers long. At the end of the pump, we have the injection well that helps to move the water into the geothermal zone, that region has naturally hot rocks. Those hot rocks turn the cold water into hot. The production well at the other end, moves water from hot rocks to the hot water pump. It helps to moves the water up into a huge container above the surface of Earth, called condenser. As the temperature rises, water evaporatres and turne into steam. Steam is then forced through the narrow connection line into the turbine. The power of steam rotates the turbine. The turbine is connected to the generator, turbine gives power to generator and produce electricity. At last, produced electricity is moved to towers that carry electricity to our houses.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You describe the main sequence from cold-water storage through underground heating to steam-driven electricity generation, and you include the important 4.5-kilometre depth. However, some stages are unclear or inaccurately described: the injection well is the shaft carrying water down, rather than a separate mechanism that moves it into the geothermal zone, and the production well does not lead to a “hot water pump.” The overview is also implicit rather than clearly stated, and the final claim that electricity is carried to houses is not shown; the diagram only indicates transmission lines and a pylon. Clarify the complete process and avoid adding unsupported details to make the account more fully accurate.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The process is presented in a generally logical order, with sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “At the end,” and “At last” helping the reader follow the stages. The links between the underground heating, the production well, and the condenser are less clear, however, and the response is written as one continuous paragraph. Some references, such as “It” after “The production well,” make it uncertain whether the subject is the well or another device. Group the stages into a clear opening overview and a sequenced description, and use more precise references and transitions so the connections between components are easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “production well,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which allows the reader to understand the general process. Some choices are informal or imprecise for a technical description: “big tank,” “huge container,” and “narrow connection line” are less suitable than neutral terms such as “storage tank” and “pipe.” There are also spelling and word-form errors, including “evaporatres” and “turne,” and “hot water pump” mislabels the production well. Aim for accurate technical nouns and standard spelling; this will make the description more precise without requiring a much wider vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including clauses such as “which contains cold water” and “that region has naturally hot rocks.” The sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “It helps to moves” should be “It helps to move,” while “water evaporates and turne into steam” needs parallel verb forms (“evaporates and turns”). In “The turbine is connected to the generator, turbine gives power to generator and produce electricity,” the clauses are joined awkwardly and the subject–verb agreement is inconsistent. Use complete, clearly joined sentences and check infinitives, agreement, and articles around singular countable nouns.
